There are many 3 leaf plants out there. Alot. Do poison ivy and poison oak just die off by winter?? Do i need to pull them out by the roots?
It doesn't "die off" in the winter. It just loses its leaves like any other deciduous plant. They regrow in the spring just like other perennials. In the winter dormancy period, they are STILL poisonous. The resin (sap) of the plant is what causes the rash, and anything that breaks the plant open or damages it releases the resin. Even the roots and berries. Also, the resin can be viable for months or even years. The only thing that degrades it is sunlight. So if you get it on your jacket, then put the jacket in a closest for a year, and put it on again, you'll get poison ivy just like it was the same day. Just spray it with round up or other high strength brush killer herbicide. That will kill it down to the root.
