APS - $185 million for 800 seats?

Anonymous
Putting the debate about whether these seats should be choice or not, why is it going to cost $185 million for 800 seats that aren't even equal to the other high school seats? Putting it in perspective, Pandora land in Disney World cost half a billion to make, and it was so, so incredibly cool.

So why so much for these hs seats that people don't want to send their kids to?

Don't have insight into this particular project, but construction costs across the board are definitely on the rise.

Did pandora land have to do a lot of excavation?

OP here - I'm not sure, but I was just using that as an example of something that was new-to-world and really spectacular. The one big ride was one of the coolest rides I've ever been on. Everything that went into Pandora land was new - they had to design and plan for everything from scratch with no template.

With a high school, there are thousands of templates for how things can be done. I realize this site has some unique constraints, but enough to make it cost $185 million for 800 seats? In a time in which we KNOW that demographically we will need a full high school in a few years?

It just seems like a really, really expensive band-aid measure.

Are you new here? This has been discussed ad nauseum across multiple threads already.

And will there be any bond capacity left when APS has to build a real 4th comprehensive high school?

The school board approved it last night.

those are some expensive seats

$185,000,000/800= $231,250 a piece!

Why would anyone build an 800 seat high school in this area?

That is just throwing away money.

I am aware of that. This process has been going on for months and we've discussed the price point extensively. Now that it's been formally approved, it's a little late to reopen that discussion.

A couple of points that I can't take credit for, because I've seen them made elsewhere:

1) The correct denominator isn't 800, because most or all of the amenities are things that are needed and will be used by all of the students at that site (e.g., Arl Tech).

2) Underground parking is significantly more expensive than surface.

Hence PP point about excavation.
I can’t imagine why people wouldn’t understand how much more costly it is to dig down a opposed to spreading out, but most people here aren’t aware of how construction works.
How many kids will be at the CC again? All total!
