DD is in a county class with a girl named Sweetie- it was on documents and on her name tag- I was surprised.. how unusual is it to name your kid after a term of endearment? I say "sweetie" (and others) to DD a lot but found myself trying to stop saying that with that little girl around.
Just wondering if it's just me being isolated - have others seen names like this too? |
It's a somewhat ridiculous name given by parents who don't have high aspirations for their child, or at least not enough sense to help pave the way for her success. Don't rein in your natural inclination to use a term of endearment as it's supposed to be used -- as a term of endearment. |
I know a Honey and a Precious, but I've never met a Sweetie. |
wow. you're a mean person |
a name paves the way for success??? Boy, I wish I had known it was that easy! |
I've seen it fairly often in families who weren't born here, mostly from the Caribbean. Doesn't rock my world, but there's much worse than being named something that means "someone who is loved." |
Oh, this is misleading. I didn't name the mean Sweetie, per se, just that I've seen first names that are common terms of endearment. |
I will stop posting now because I can't even type. ![]() |
God there's a lot of prisses on tonight. Would you really give your child that name and feel good about it? |
I'm OP here- perhaps was a little harsh in how she/he wrote it- but talking now with DD- I mean, I can't imagine someone coming up to me and saying- Hi- I'm Sweetie Miller (or whatever last name).. the first reaction is to wonder.. Ok- maybe she won't have a career in corporate world but it's not the best impression.. There was a lot in the media of celebrities naming the kids these ridiculous names- but in their case- their parents have tons of $ and maybe it won't impact their future per say.. It just took me by surprise.. Thanks for PP saying Honey and precious- is this an upcoming trend I guess? |

Whaaaat - you're saying it wouldn't look professional on a resume?!?!
I'm naming my next kid Awesome. |
I'm naming my kid "Awesomer"
There could be a very reasonable explanation, like her real name is svetlana and her nickname is sweetie. |
I know a Honey too. Yuppie parents born in this country. Hopefully they could always go by a middle name. I would be very uncomfortable with anyone who crosses my young child's path calling them by what seems to be such an intimate name. |
I'd take Sweetie over Nevaeh any day. |
