Is a "Lax Bro" a real thing?

Anonymous
I get boys trying to be cool, playing lacrosse, talking slang, and growing out the hair. But is the Lax Bro culture a real thing, or just basically jock culture repackaged?

I’m no expert, but I think it’s jock culture repackaged, but also a little magnified just because the sport isn’t all that diverse. Players and coaches are overwhelming Caucasian. It’s easier for group think to take over when there’s less diversity to keep things real or in check.

Anybody from Landon School care to weigh in? They are the bro-yish of the bros.

Fck off, idiot. There are plenty of obnoxious non-white jocks, and as for "keeping things in check" just google and it won't be too hard to find some stories about non-white jocks raping women on campus and being convicted of other serious crimes.

And the next time you read about a couple of college football players assaulting a coed I dare you to swap out the football players for ACC lacrosse players (doesn’t matter which school) and imagine the coverage the story would get and what kind of broad socio-economic and racial points the media would try to make.

Are you white or non-white because you certainly have the obnoxious bit covered. Must be lax bro.

The issue is lack of diversity, not white people. Sorry you took it that way but read again what I wrote. The same issue arises in other activities where one group is an overwhelming majority, not just Caucasian’s.

It’s a legitimate discussion and name callingandncursing to stifle discussion isn’t what the sport needs.

If you think adding "diversity" to anything improves behavior or learning outcomes, then you are a victim of progressive brainwashing. Sad!

DS has always had a few Asian Americans and black athletes on his lax teams including at private. In public there were also a few kids from Central American countries as well as at least 1 kid from the Mideast.

Our family thinks with parents in this area being scared away from football, lax will only become more diverse. I do think in parts of our area it is mostly white. We are perhaps in a little bubble of diversity.

Getting to a skill level that allows play in college is another thing entirely. Most recent immigrant families are more interested in their kids focusing on academics over athletics. Nevertheless, we do know Asians and blacks playing D1 and D3 though.

I know some really nice boys playing LlAx— but usually from Catholic or Christian HSs. And some real jackwads. The jackwads tend to have rich daddies who are trying to relive their jock glory days through their sons, with an added dose of social snobbery. Leads to very entitled kids. And before you jump on me, then if that does not describe your family, I am probably not thinking about your kid.

And BTW— this phenomena is not limited to boys or sports in the DMV. Lots of parents trying to relieve their youth by buying their daughters $1000 outfits, or luxury cars, or pushing their kid into an Ivy, or to be the best flute player ever. Not for the kids benefit, but to feed their own ego.

I think the social snobbery factor is a good point. Not anyone can play lacrosse. It's an expensive sport for one (equipment, club fees). It's also still a sport with hotbed areas like the DMV, and pockets in CT and NY. The only non-east coast club teams to speak of all spring from ultra-exclusive areas in CA and TX. Thankfully the sport is expanding geographically. Still, it'll remain an "elite" sport and that will in turn feed into lax bro/elitist/frat culture.

Yep, lacrosse players are absolutely horrible.

We need to work on making the sport more diverse since we cant compete against football and basketball:

1) "21 percent of NFL players have committed serious crimes" - I think we really need to work on this since the lacrosse world is really lagging here.
2) NCAA D1 football graduation rate 77.8% and basketball 81.7% - lacrosse is only 91% (we seriously need to catch up here and if you were to compare grades and area of study it would be worse)

Lacrosse has always had an "elite" image.

While it is changing somewhat, the best teams are still private schools and boarding schools.

The lax families enjoy this exclusivity, foster the image, and aren't particularly interested in making the sport more widely available to the masses.

All this gets into the heads of the players. The Lax Bro is just a manifestation of all this elitism.

Stupid post. Why is the responsibility to the lacrosse community to make the sport available to the masses. No one is stopping anyone from playing lacrosse. Its up to kids and their parents to decide what sports they want to play and they are simply choosing other sports. Playing competitive football, soccer, baseball etc. is all just as expensive as lacrosse and no one is bad mouthing those sports or calling them elitist.

Montgomery Village was once the premier program in Montgomery County (produced Paul Rabil and others) but folded their lacrosse program as the demographics changed and the residents played sport that were much more culturally important. Believe me no one was turning away minorities or low income families quite the opposite.
