| We live in Virginia. Is there a way to pay tuition and have my rising tenth grader attend Wilson HS? |
| No. It is extremely overcrowded. |
| The rule is that DCPS and charter schools are only available to out-of-district residents when there is no waitlist of DC residents. There are currently 98 people on the waitlist for 10th grade so no, you won't be allowed to pay out of state tuition for Wilson. |
| OP, try for Duke Ellington. They take a lot of out of state people. |
| Having a kid in DCPS is convenient for our work commute and allowing DD participate in after school activities without the worry that she is home all alone in VA should a medical emergency arise. |
Then move to DC. |
Seriously dude - stay the heck out of our schools unless you pay taxes. Or...hey...pay for private in DC. Talk about entitled - you made your housing decision... |
|
It would be kind of miserable to commute from VA to Wilson for high school anyway.
A large number of the kids walk to school. |
Yep, pretty much. The DC government has zero reason to make you a priority when there are plenty of DC residents who want into Wilson but can't. Ballou, Cardozo, Bell, HD Woodson, Phelps, and McKinley Tech didn't waitlist 10th graders but the lottery date has passed if you're looking for 2018-19. |
| There are dozens of DC residents that would pay tuition to get a 10th grade spot if they could. |
Like almost half, by some estimates. Ward 9 gets preference over MoCo or Va., however. |
There may be "principal's discretion." It's worth looking into. |
| This is obviously a troll and you all fell for it. Even Alexandria schools are preferable to Wilson, they are just poking you. |
| Poster from earlier, we don’t want to move to DC because we own land that has been in our family for 3 generations. While it’s true Alexandria schools are on par with Wilson and Duke Ellington and maybe School without walls DD would have to compete too much with VA students. Since the bar is pretty low in dcps and the FARMS rate pretty high, when DD graduates in two years she will eligible for scholarships from top schools because she’d possibly fall under the overcoming a hardship category. I’m doing what I can to provide my child with advantages. Just like the other 49% of MD/VA families with their kids enrolled in DCPS. DC isn’t going to do anything about it because each student is a body counted toward their bloated federal funding budget for education. |
See told you, troll. Sad part is there is typically truth in trolling which is why it works. |
