We are looking for a family friendly spot where we can rent a house for ourselves and our extended family next summer(possibly more then one house) We would prefer to be right on the water. Anywhere from NJ to Florida is game.

OBX is so trashy! It won't be hard to find something nicer!

Have you actually been to OBX?? Trashy? Please.

Having said that, if you don't want OBX what about the DE Beaches (Bethany or Rehobeth)? Or VA Beach? They have the benefit of being close by.

We've enjoyed Carolina Beach in NC. It's a little south of Wilmington.

I am a huge fan of Hilton Head, SC, I recommend it to everyone. If you can stay in Sea Pines, great food, nice beaches, golf, boating, great rentals. Try seapines.com, get a feel for what's available thru them and then do a web search to see if anyone can beat the price.

I really like Bethany Beach, but the houses aren't right on the water like they are in OBX.

We love Rehoboth. Check out www.vrbo.com for vacation rentals by owner. We use that site to list our's and we get a lot of business from it. (Our's is not what you are looking for, btw). Enjoy your vacation!

Sunset beach (near the NC/SC border) is nice and low key. We also love Sanibel and Captiva islands, although they can get really hot in the summer. Beautiful beaches!

Rosemary Beach or Seaside on Gulf Side in Fl -- not cheap -- but so beautiful, Gulf water is really warm, calm, very nice sand.

Sandbridge Beach, which is part of Virginia Beach, and we just discovered this year. Also, Topsail Island in North Carolina, but it's a seven hour drive.

We also love Hilton Head for all the reasons mentioned above. We've had good luck with vrbo.com.

Litchfield Beach or Pawley's Island in SC. Very private, family friendly, and not that far from Myrtle Beach (maybe 30 minutes by car) if it rains and you need to do some awful touristy thing with the kids. Inlet Point, Inlet Point South and the Peninsula are great developments to rent in - it's a gated community with multiple pools and a boat dock. Houses are right on the beach or on the Salt Marsh (or both in the case of the Peninsula). You can rent through the Dieter Company.

OBX is not trashy! Maybe Nags Head might be a little rough, but north (Duck, Corolla) of there is very very nice.

Does Folly Beach have any kid-friendly/family activities?
