I would love some ideas for the slow cooker, especially things that have worked with picky eaters.
to add to the OP-a recipe that is actually good? Everything I have ever tried comes out nasty. My family isn't picky but has yet to eat anything from a slow cooker.
I think it's probably best to stick to foods that taste good when relatively mushy. Chilli works well. stews, braised meats...
Pulled pork or chicken are just about the only thing my kids will eat from the slowcooker ... just throw in a cheap hunk of pork (pork butt) or chicken breasts, cover with bbq sauce (about 1/2 a bottle) and cook on low until it falls apart. I also love, and my not so picky 3 yo will eat, carnitas ... pork cut into cubes tossed in salt, oregano and pepper and cooked on low. Yum!
i agree...i dont know what it is, but i've never made a good slow cooker recipe. |
I found a really good one on martha stewart's website for soy ginger chicken. It's yummy.
Please share!
I made short ribs in the slow cooker once and they turned out really good. I grilled them first on both sides, and then cut them up and put them in the crock pot all day, covered with about half a bottle of BBQ sauce. They turned out really good and it was easy.
The only time I've made anything good is when I've used those McCormick's slow cooker packets. The italian herb chicken is really good.

Chicken Caccitore
4-6 chicken thighs (dont substitute breasts as they dry out during the long cook) a jar of spaghetti sauce (about 3.5 cups) half of a tiny can of tomato paste 2 green peppers diced a large onion diced 1 tsp to a tbs of minced garlic (works out to about 2-6 cloves) 1 15oz can of peas a tsp each of dried basil, parsley, oregano (if using fresh increase to a tbs) salt and pepper to taste If you want maximum flavor, brown the chicken thighs on the stove first. I usually dont remember that I need to put dinner in the pot until its almost too late and skip this step without adverse results. Place chicken in the crockpot and top with vegetables, spaghetti sauce, garlic, tomato paste, and salt and pepper and seasonings if using dry. Cook on high for 4 to 6 hours. If using fresh herbs, I add them in around the last half hour of cooking. Serve over rice or pasta. |
tried a recipe like the PP suggested and it came out mushy and "washed out"

I'm not sure how this will go over with picky eaters but it is a favorite in our house.
