Flying to Vietnam

Anonymous
My brother is getting married in Vietnam this September. Does anyone have suggestions on the best route/connections from this area? It will be me, DH and DS 18months. There are many option out there so I am hoping to get some advice based on experience. Thank you.

My husband has gone to Vietnam for work, and he has gone through Tokyo. There's a non-stop to Tokyo on United and I think All Nippon as well. Either way, it's a haul.

? United doesn't go to Vietnam anymore.

He takes United to Toyko and then another airline to Vietnam (Japan I think).

right. UAL itself doesn't go to Vietnam anymore.

Isn't there a flight that goes from DC area to Philadelphia to Seoul, Korea across the Atlantic along the Siberian route. Then from Seoul to Vietnam.
You can't avoid the long hours. Nothing you can do about that.

Years ago I flew to Hong Kong on a US carrier, stayed overnight and then to Hanoi on Cathay Pacific; might be 3 hour flight from Hong Kong, which seemed like nothing after the previous long haul.

Cathay Pacific begins service from Dulles to Hong Kong on September 15. Not sure if that is early enough for you.

Korean Air via Seoul, ANA via Tokyo and others via BKK are all routes I’ve taken. I really hope you won’t have too much rain.
Try to stay up later every night two weeks before you leave and the jet lag won’t hit you as hard.

United to Tokyo and then a flight to Vietnam. I do that for work fairly often and never have an issue with jet lag. That said, it's always business or first class, which makes a huge difference since you can sleep. See if you can buy upgrades.

I'd also recommend flykng someone other than United, frankly. I do it because I'm required to fly a US carrier, but otherwise I'd fly Japan Airlines. Much better.

I would do the new CX flight to Hong Kong and then hop over the last bit. It's going to be a 14-15 hour flight to HKG but only 1 or 2 hours to Vietnam. Going to Japan is ok, but you fly 11 hours and then fly an additional 5-6 hours to Vietnam. Not exactly the most fun. Get the long haul done and dusted and then make the short hop.

Plus you can book a layover in HKG for a day or two and go shopping and see the city.

11 hours? My flight from JFK to Tokyo was more like 15. Bad day, maybe?

I'm the PP who said her husband has done this same route. He flies United because he has status and wants the points, but he would agree with you as well. Unlike you, he has to fly economy for work, and relies on status upgrades to make the flights more bearable.

OP, I would look on Google Flights and see what the shortest flights are with an Asian carrier.
