Flying to Vietnam

Going to Japan is ok, but you fly 11 hours and then fly an additional 5-6 hours to Vietnam. Not exactly the most fun. Get the long haul done and dusted and then make the short hop.

Plus you can book a layover in HKG for a day or two and go shopping and see the city.

11 hours? My flight from JFK to Tokyo was more like 15. Bad day, maybe?

Oops, I was thinking SFO to Tokyo which is 11. IAD-NRT is 13:30-15:00, depending on the winds.

PP here,

But honestly, after 11 hours I kind of stop counting...

I'd also recommend flykng someone other than United, frankly. I do it because I'm required to fly a US carrier, but otherwise I'd fly Japan Airlines. Much better.

I'm the PP who said her husband has done this same route. He flies United because he has status and wants the points, but he would agree with you as well. Unlike you, he has to fly economy for work, and relies on status upgrades to make the flights more bearable.

OP, I would look on Google Flights and see what the shortest flights are with an Asian carrier.

OP here. I have searched on Google and I'm not necessarily looking for the shortest flights. I guess I'm trying to be realistic flying with an 18 month old so was looking to see if others had done more creative things to break up the long trip. A co-worker suggested flying the other way and breaking up the trip with a one or two day stop in Europe or Turkey. Not sure if that's for us though. Thanks to all the responses so far.

I like this approach too- we’ve gone through Seoul and Tokyo and that last leg is always rough.
