| DD (10) has been wearing orthotics for about 6 years. We started with off-the-shelf at shoe train. We then moved to custom orthotics made by a podiatrist. I’m now looking for a new place as we left the podiatrist. I called Hanger and they told me I needed a prescription to have orthotics made there. Is that the case everywhere? After our last appointment at Johns Hopkins they told me that DD did not need a prescription for orthotics—to just go to an orthotist and have them made. So, is there an orthotist around here where I won’t need a prescription for DD? Or, should I just have the pediatrician write a prescription and go to Hanger? |

Dave Harris in Laurel.
Not sure what the cut off is, but for younger kids Early Intervention Associates in Rockville. |
| My youngest has worn orthotic since 15 months (thank you, EI!). He's now 12. Everywhere I've been to get custom orthotic required a prescription. I get it from our pediatrician. |
Thank you. OP here. Pediatricusn won’t write the prescription. I called the orthopedist to see if they would write a prescription for us. |
16:12 here. Did your pediatrician say why he won't write it? I've actually got 2 kids who wear orthotics. My pediatrician has no problem writing a prescription for them. You can see when they walk that they supinate. |
They didn’t say why. They just refused to do so. DD’s issues are very obvious as she walks on her ankles (has no arch and severly pronates)with her feet pointing outward. |
| A PT at Hopkins (Kennedy Krieger) wrote our prescription. Maybe your regular PT would? |
Unless you are loving your pediatrician otherwise, I'd consider changing. I can't tell you how often I've called our pediatrician with a request for something like this and he's been very responsive. It's not like this is a controlled substance or something that could be abused. |
