Trying for a girl (i know, ridiculous)

Anonymous
So we have two healthy happy boys and thought we'd 'try' for a girl. I know, silly, but still asking!

We had sex saturday & sunday. My ovulation test today gave me a smiley face. Should we not have sex today since sat/sun were in the 2-4 days before ovulation and that's the old wives tale?

Did anyone have a girl with an ovulation test? If so, when did you have sex?

Thanks. I'm sure its silly and we get what we get and dont get upset!

There are no credible scientific studies that prove the Shettles method works.

Have sex before ovulation and cross your fingers! The rest is just mostly up to luck.

Ugh I would love to know this too! I reallllly want a girl.

My friend used the shettles method and had a girl! But...who's to say that that's what did it

This is the type of thing that raises you chances from 50% to approx 50.5%. It may be statistically meaningful on a population level, but on an individual level it will not up your chances any.

But if you get pregnant easily, I guess it's one way to make it interesting?

There's some real evidence suggesting that eating less, for example by skipping breakfast, will slightly increase your odds of a girl:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-gender-diet/skipping-breakfast-may-mean-your-baby-is-a-girl-idUSL2284780520080423

"Mathews and colleagues studied 740 first-time pregnant mothers in Britain and found 56 percent of those in the group with the highest energy intake at conception had sons, compared with 45 percent in the lowest group. ...In humans, going without breakfast may be interpreted by the body as signaling low food availability, since it depresses levels of blood sugar."

Obviously this is far from definitive, and even if it is right, it's just shifts the odds a bit, but worth trying.

Oh, and one more data point: I skipped breakfast regularly and followed up 2 boys with a girl.

Well we decided to wait, just in case it works, and since we aren't in any crazy hurry. Thanks for your advice everyone!

I did the diet that is supposed to favor girls - I don’t remember the details but it was eating spinach and tofu and not meat and olives, etc. Something about the ph or acidity of your body? I had a girl but really who knows why I had a girl?

I did the “girl diet” and tried to time it and got boy #3.

Silly me, I thought it was the *sperm* that determined the gender, not what you ate or when you had sex.

This thread is so entertaining!

I have a cousin who keeps trying the different methods to get a daughter. She's 4 boys in and they are trying for their 5th now...

The theory involves trying to control which sperm your body is more receptive to. Silly you.

Have you read the Impatient Women's Guide to Getting Pregnant? It reviews the scientific studies and debunks Shettles, whose research wasn't scientific and based on anecdotal evidence.

The IW guide says sex closer to ovulation results in a girl.
