Thoughts? I like this a lot better then adding another agency to the city to review data OSSE was supposed to review. If they looked at all aspects of our current system, maybe their recommendations might bring real change and/or reform.

I'd be especially curious to see if they thought a real elected School Board should return as oversight in conjunction with replacing the Charter Board. it would be nice to put the entire District's educational landscape under an elected body rather than Mayor Appointees.

I taught in DCPS in 04-05 before mayoral control. We went the first 11 weeks without paychecks. Schools didn't open on time. Let's not glorify the good ole days of an elected school board, please.

OK, but the city's changed a hell of a lot in the last 15 years. The current system relies too much on Mayoral expertise, which may not be there, and an effective chancellor, which we may not have (we may not even have any permanent chancellor). The right political balance hasn't been struck.

Important to note that when there was an elected school board the superintendent was responsible for many more students and the repair and renovation of the school buildings. Now there is a separate agency that is responsible for the buildings and there is a chancellor responsible for fewer children.

A top to bottom review is depressing to me.

More consultants, yet more stakeholder listening sessions, and basically the can is kicked down the road until after the next election -- for both the mayor and many council members.

Completely agree. But when if ever will DC have a Mayor and more Council members that aren't just really a part of the same old clubs. Corrupt individuals that came up in the same ssystem as those before hiring and running the city based on optics, kick backs, and outdated ways of thinking. Instead of what it could be growing potential of a growing & developing urban educated diverse city (still with affordable housing) it could be.

Lots of current council members aren't part of the same old club -- eg Silverman, Nadeau, Cheh. But they don't seem to be much more effective than the others.
