| I have a signed lease starting this summer (before school starts). Anyone have any experience with registering your child for the school of the lease address for the fall? I'd like to get registered before I move for a few reasons. Again the move is before school starts in the fall. Thanks |
| Just call the school and ask. I don't know the official answer to your question, but schools generally prefer more notice rather than less of new students who will be starting the following year so I'm sure they'll work with you if you have the signed lease to show them. |
Yeah, I've been working with the school trying to get an answer. They reached out to the central office and have been trying to get a response. |
Central office is in the process of moving to a new building so it's possible that the person/department you are trying to contact doesn't even have phones connected. Email is likely best. But really, the school that your future residence is zoned for is going to be the better place to get answers. |
Yes and by phone they give me a not sure answer. I wonder if I should just go to the school paperwork in hand and say register my kid please. |
Yes, that sounds like your best bet to get an answer quickly! Avoid the 30 minutes or so surrounding arrival and dismissal though- the front offices are usually crazy busy at those times! |
| Technically the policy says you have to be currently residing in Arlington to register, which is probably the issue. Do you mind sharing what school it is and the reason you want to register now rather than after you move? We might be able to give you some feedback specific to your concerns. |
| Are you talking about registering your child for next year, or registering your child to start in the school now? If it's the latter, they're not going to let you do it since you don't currently reside in Arlington. |
The why is for special needs reasons / prep and separately for being able to register for aftercare. |
Elementary or middle school? |
Elementary - child already in school and has IEP in different non-VA jurisdiction |
Got it. On the aftercare issue, you don't actually have to be enrolled in APS yet to register for extended day next year. You can see the specific instructions on this in the extended day FAQ: https://www.apsva.us/extended-day/frequently-asked-questions/. Registration opens May 1, so you're good there. As for the IEP side, if you haven't already, I wouldn't mention to the elementary school that this is why you want to register early. This tends to be a busy time of year for SpEd departments because everyone who's been doing evaluations is trying to get their IEPs/504s in place for next year. If they know that allowing you to register early is going to result in an IEP request that will then start the clock running on their time to respond when they're already overloaded, they may be less likely to make a policy exception for you. |
The school system is not sure about anything. Rent elsewhere. |
| I would contact the school directly to let them know you are going to be living within their boundaries so they can get a rough number count but don't actually enroll until the summer. We have moved in and out of Arlington several times and it's much easier to walk over when school is out and bring all the paperwork and enroll your child. You can honestly do it at any time, even last minute, just go when the office is open, but it's good to let them know unofficially so they can plan for the right number of teachers. We've had a couple years where that extra 1-2 kids enrolled in a grade and pushed the numbers up to form a new class. |
| I would take the lease to the (new) school office in person to register. We lived in DC and signed a lease in Arlington literally days before school started. I just took the new lease in and filled out the paperwork at the school. It was fine. |
