Technically the policy says you have to be currently residing in Arlington to register, which is probably the issue. Do you mind sharing what school it is and the reason you want to register now rather than after you move? We might be able to give you some feedback specific to your concerns.
The why is for special needs reasons / prep and separately for being able to register for aftercare.
Elementary or middle school?
Elementary - child already in school and has IEP in different non-VA jurisdiction
Got it. On the aftercare issue, you don't actually have to be enrolled in APS yet to register for extended day next year. You can see the specific instructions on this in the extended day FAQ: https://www.apsva.us/extended-day/frequently-asked-questions/. Registration opens May 1, so you're good there. As for the IEP side, if you haven't already, I wouldn't mention to the elementary school that this is why you want to register early. This tends to be a busy time of year for SpEd departments because everyone who's been doing evaluations is trying to get their IEPs/504s in place for next year. If they know that allowing you to register early is going to result in an IEP request that will then start the clock running on their time to respond when they're already overloaded, they may be less likely to make a policy exception for you.
