Are there distinct differences between Janney and Murch? Lafayette and Key? The PARCC scores are within 5-10 points at these schools, and I would assume they have to follow the same core curriculum. What are the differences?
Thanks! |
| Aftercare options, facilities. Lafayette houses some special education classrooms. Key has a higher percentage of students who live OOB. |
| I'd say there's not a lot of difference at the top level of the tier. Janney and Mann are quite similar, although Mann unfortunately feeds to Hardy while Janney is in Deal. Lafayette is very strong. Murch is strong, but it's not exactly in the top drawer with Janney and Mann. |
| OK, thanks. Is that it? Do some schools have a higher number of good teachers? |
| JKLMs aren't really a thing anymore. Lots of elementary schools in DC are great now. |
Um, what makes Mann so much better than Murch? They're within 3-5 percentage points on the PARCC. And Murch is about to open an amazing new modernized facility. |
Agree that the exclusive acronym is outdated, but saying "lots" of elementary schools in DC are "great" is a bit of an overstatement. Yes, there are more, but it's still a small percentage of schools that people are excited to go to and stay through fifth. |
Parents being crazy! They are all good schools. Really. |
Why do people (or a person) have to keep repeating this - there is nothing unfortunate about being fed to Hardy. Given some of the downsides of larger schools some might actually prefer Hardy which is not even half as large as Deal. |
+1 - Janney parent |

Also recommend looking beyond the outdated (if it ever had any merit!) JKLM world. Hearst, Ross and Eaton (renovation to get through there, though) are great, too. You do have to consider the middle and high school path but Hardy is a good option.

I agree that Hardy's time has come. It's great to have another middle school option. |
| We are at Murch and love it, but would be equally happy at Eaton or Harst. The differences are almost non-existant. |
|
I agree, I'd say the difference is where you want to live not the schools.
Unless you feel strongly about chickens. Janney has a chicken coop.

| They all have the same zone of test scores. Ross and Stoddert are arguably at the top in recent years. Might as well just start referring to the top-performing elementaries as "upper northwest elementary schools" -- UNWES. Except I guess Brent on Cap Hill is pretty good too. Whatever, just pull the test score data and look at the top ones, right?bree |
