Prepping/Scamming the Cogat

"In every zip code in America the children of recent immigrants are outperforming children of the entitled culture. This has created an ever expanding performance and achievement gap in education as the entitled culture witnesses in every zip code these children taking their self anointed spots in every AAP, gifted program, IB, AP and Honors program in the land.

This is the root cause of this furor. And the entitled culture will go to any unethical length to disrupt this trend -- including voter fraud and suppression"

Watch out, there will be panic in the land when American immigrants take over lacrosse and crew?

I wonder what trick will drop from your bag then? "Lacrosse and crew prep" businesses are equal to cheating!

If they are so athletic how come they spend so much prep time in the pool (Phelps), at club lacrosse and on the erg machine?

Should not be necessary they are all naturally talented at swimming, lacrosse, golf and crew?

How come they have to get prepped so much? Is sports that important? Is winning or having the fatest time so important?

Well, I don't know about the fattest time. . . . but the athletic, IVY college sports-playing comparison isn't entirely accurate since this thread started out talking about 6 and 7 year olds prepping for the CogAT, something that has only seemed to gain momentum in recently years as GT became AAP and therefore a prize to be won by aspiring parents.

The reason so many object to this so-called arms race, is all that drilling, prepping and training at very young ages takes time away from kids learning equally important things that may play a much bigger role in their future lives and happiness -- play, developing friendships and social skills, time for creativity and contemplation and observation of the world, etc. If all you crazy preppers would just stand down, the rest of us could let our children have a childhood.

I agree with the above post. In fact when I watch the high school teams practice basketball, volleyball which the coaches sterning talking to them about putting in more effort or yelling at them. I t think the sports athletes look like robotic drones running up and down the field as their tigermom coach /parent prep them. The most aggressive parents I have met are the sport parents. Especially, when the high school kid no longer want to swim but thousands have been spent on driving them to meets and hundreds spent on the Olympic swimming suit.

I can already feel the racism against Asians as they take over golf .

Are people actually saying that otaining the exact form/copy of the test, having a 7 yo memorize the answers, then take the test is ethical? If so, I hope you enjoy your career befoe you get busted for fraud.

apples and oranges, although it verifies what I suspected. Some groups see academics as a war and they want to beat everyone else. It's not about love of learning or thirst for learning or that nonsense - it's about beating everyone. Joke is on them, though, since TJ is rejecting students whose essays and SIS look "too prepped."

Now if DC takes second or third in a sporting event it doesn't bother me. However, I have heard if kids in certain groups get a "B" they parents go ballistic and accuse them of bringing dishonor upon the famiry.

Some posters have not read the parts of this thread that explain the difference between "test prep" and athletic training. In addition, we are talking about first and second graders here, not TJ and college applicants.

One can say over and over again that "preparation is the key to life" blah, blah, blah, but it doesn't change the fact that the type of test prep many people in Fairfax County were using was not approved by FCPS and was not appropriate for use by parents and students before taking the tests used here. The type of "test prep" discussed here is very, very different from the many other types of study and preparation referred to in some of the posts on this thread.

FCPS has specifically said that they changed the test because of the inappropriate "prep" materials used by some parents. People react in different ways when a wrong has been pointed out to them. In this particular case, some posters have reacted by disparaging those who have pointed out the wrong: calling them racists, lazy, entitled, anything they can think of to distract attention from the fact that certain types of "test prep" are not considered appropriate by the school district.

This statement has nothing to do with hardwork and prepping for tests, exams and studies. Nothing at all. You are the only one talking about smuggling tests and exams and forcing students to memorize the answers. This is not what is meant by hard work and study or test preparation and prepping.

No one is going to jail for hard work and prepping for exams and tests. There is nothing illegal about hard work and study. There is nothing illegal about prepping for tests or lacrosse.

There is no difference between mental training and athletic training. There is no difference between prepping for a game or prepping for a test. In the former instance, one sizes up your potential opponents (game film, past performances) in the latter one reviews subject matter (math, grammar).

There is no difference between "game prep" or "test prep". Both usually yield better performance. Athletic and mental training yield improved athleticism and intelligence/smarts. Pure and simple.

When it comes to prepping or training there is no difference in the mechanics or process if you are a 2 year-old (potty training) or a TJ matriculant. All require repetition, carrots, and sticks to achieve the desired outcome.
