I binged watched Teen Mom 16 and Pregnant and It made me so depressed. Those teens are so clueless and don't seem to realize the gravity of their unplanned pregnancies. A teen parent and the child will most likely be poor with no education or real job skills forever. That show is glorifying teen motherhood. Being young with a baby is trendy.
Meanwhile, In real life, my niece 20 is due any minute to have her second baby by another worthless guy who dumped her when she got pregnant. She posts open messages to him on facebook, because he is avoiding her. She works as a waitress and lives with her mom. I have another niece who had two babies by age by an unstable boy who is on drugs and unemployed, she lives with her mom and step dad in rural Va with few job opportunities. My nephew in another state has fathered a baby by a 16 yo girl, both are late in finishing high school. But neither is planning to go to college because they can't afford it because they have to take care of a baby. Lastly, I have another older niece with two babies by two different men. She works and supports them, but her life is full of drama with the negligent baby daddies. She posts on social media how sad she is that she can't meet a good guy to accept her and kids. She is so lonely and broke and tired in her 20's Teen parenthood is a tragedy, but MTV is glorying it by making teen moms celebrities. It's so sad. |
| Since teen mom started airing the teen pregnancy rate is the lowest it has ever been. |
| I guess you missed the point of Teen Mom. It shows that teen motherhood is not glamorous or fun or desirable. During the show airings, Google searches for birth control spike. |

So whats up with your family?
No teen Mom's in my family of over 30 cousins... |
+1 The show is doing a great job of revealing the reality of teen motherhood. A big improvement over when kids see a fellow student with a baby and all they see is cute baby! |

Actually that show does send mixed messages about teen pregnancy. The teen stars are well paid and famous.

16 and Pregnant did that. Teen Mom on the other hand, no. Look at the shit show nearly all the TMs have turned into. Not only the typical consequences of teen pregnancy (more children soon after, no lasting long term relationships, no high school/college graduation) but they make 6 figure incomes and are famous. Would-be teen moms who watch the show are seeing that you can have a baby as a teen and become rich without continuing education or even juggling work and motherhood. Yes, there are exceptions, but those are also the women with the most stable families to begin with (Chelsea and Maci come to mind). MTV likes to pretend that they have something to do with lower pregnancy rates, but an overall movement of more complete sex education in schools is likely the reason, as areas with abstinence only education have higher teen pregnancy rates. |

The show has been directly attributed to declining teen birth rates

I don't know! These are nieces and nephew on my side and DH side. I don't think they are any more promiscuous than kids in my generation (their parents) I can say that in my generation of the family there were some pregnancies (young and unmarried) but because it was so scandalous the pregnancies were terminated and they went on to college, marriage and family. |
