Clemson-Pros/Cons

Anonymous
Our junior DD had added this school to her list of possible schools. Anyone have any experience with this school and can identify any pros/cons?
Also, I see one of the main factors for merit aid is class rank. Any idea how they handle HS that don't rank (i.e. MCPS).
Thanks.

CONS
In the middle of nowhere
2hrs from airport

Slightly conservative
Party school
Not worth price tag without merit

PROS

Good merit aid
Good science school
Lots of school spirit
Lots of clubs and intramurals
Well laid out campus (although it is huge)

Less than an hour from GSP Airport, which has non-stop flights from DCA.

It's definitely not 2 hours from the airport. More like 45 minutes, but it's a solid 45 minutes. It is in the middle of nowhere, but the town is enough for the kids. My whole family went there, and they loved it. My parents loved it so much they even retired down there. It used to be much, much cheaper. Like $2000 for a semester. They have made the school a lot bigger and have really marketed to out of state people who can pay to subsidize the SC people. It's become a college of rich kids.

Flights are expensive though. I cannot get them for less than $500 on football weekends if I try within a few months, and the times are terrible. I'm going down in October and got my tickets maybe 6 weeks ago and they were already $350/each.

Over 2hrs from a normal airport with normals fates.

GSP is an expensive little airport and it is still an hour.

I’m flying to GSP later this month. I justnch3cked and Nonstop Fares are still $145 nonstop from IAD one-way and $250 round trip. I think I paid a little less a month ago, but have a hotel sstay included in my package deal.

I just bought tix to GSP for $224 in May...

Is this nonstop from DCA? I'm looking for weekends in June, July and August and the best I'm seeing is almost $300.

Yes. May 2-8.

Traveling on weekends tends to be more expensive, regardless of whether you are going to Greenville or Paris. If you can adjust your travel days you will find there are plenty of flights to Greenville in the $220 range in summer.

I hate that they (still?) release latex balloons at football games. The university has taken the position that the release does not harm the environment. Feel this is representative of a much larger problem with the university mind-set.

Of non-HBCUs, Clemson is #12 in producing black engineers. That’s pretty cool.

It would be tough to justify paying for Clemson over UMD- similar schools but a big price difference.

It might not be. Clemson offers generous merit aid.

Its a $50K price tag for tuition and fees. With merit aid (OOS scholarship), it looks like you can get "up to $15000". That's still $35K. In-state in Virginia would be cheaper for example with Va Tech.
