Clemson-Pros/Cons

In the middle of nowhere
2hrs from airport
Very white
Slightly conservative
Party school
Not worth price tag without merit

PROS
Up and coming school
Good merit aid
Good science school
Lots of school spirit
Lots of clubs and intramurals
Well laid out campus (although it is huge)

No more "white" than many New England schools.

It always amuses me when posters cry “so white!!!” at schools like Clemson and then turn around and send their kids to places like UVM or UDel or UW-Madison.

Is Clemson considered SC's flagship U?

No. University of South Carolina is better academically, at least for liberal arts. Univ. of South Carolina has an impressive Honors program too.

Clemson is 83% white and majority conservative. No international students and I bet the majority AA are athletes.

Umm, yeah, no. There’s over 1000 international students at Clemson- about 8% of the student UG body. If you can’t do a simple google search before spouting of nonsense...peace.

Wow! I must’ve been looking at old data. Thanks for the correction.

My husband and I are Clemson grads and did have a great time. We met working on the newspaper together. I love that it’s a small college town. It’s a great engineering school with lots of partnerships with area firms, including GE. Most graduates settles between Charlotte and Atlanta. My degree, Graphic Communications, was serious about getting jobs and two internships were required and all but a few were paid. Mine even provided housing, and I ended up working for one of them for a few years after graduating.

My DH went on a full-ride scholarship and was in the honors college. He developed strong relationships with his teachers, both in and or if his major. He’d often go drinking at Nicks with his philosophy teacher.

It is a more conservative school, lots old southern families. Strong Greek community. Lots of monogramming. But I never felt left out or had a bad time meeting people not fitting into that mold.

The cost is way higher now than when I went, particularly for out is state. I primarily paid my way, so that would cause me pause today. But it’s in step with other schools.

“US Colleges are Separating into Winners and Losers.” Clemson is categorized as a winner.

Con: are you sure you want your kid to go to school in a foreign county?

In all seriousness. I’ve loved in SC. Once you get outside of Hilton Head and Charleston, I am not a fan.
