Any Eaton parents here?

Anonymous
We didn’t get into any of schools we applied for via the lottery. Our IB school is Eaton so that’s where we’ll have to send our child for K.

If your child goes to school here, what do you love and dislike about the school?

Eaton is a great school. Lots of involved parents. One of the most diverse student bodies in the city. Sweet kids. You'll be happy there.

This is awesome! Thank you.

Not an Eaton parent, but our friends have 2 kids there and are incredibly happy!

The only downside that I would say about Eaton is that is it so used to getting the short end of the stick that administrators and parents seem somewhat passive compared to those in other Upper NW schools when it comes to pushing back on "Central." Eaton was the so-called "collateral damage" sacrificial school in the forced march from Deal to Hardy. It's practically last in line for renovation among Upper NW schools and the full future funding outlook is uncertain, post Duke-Ellington. It will absorb the full impact of the Ward 3 homeless shelter, rather than splitting enrollment with some other schools, and there is no programmatic planning by DCPS to date on how Eaton will cope with challenges of an increase in at-risk kids. There's no long term parking plan for teachers and staff, and DCPS says that underground parking is off the table -- despite the fact that Janney, Murch and Ellington got it. And so on.

I have a kid in prek right now, so the same age as yours. We love it! The school atmosphere is warm and accepting. Lots of parent involment and community events. The staff, including aftercare, takes great care of the kids. We love our kids teachers and what they’ve been able to bring out in her. We have high hopes for next year.

What do I dislike about the school? Well, the school. The building is old and the grounds are small. If you weren’t aware, they have started planning for a major renovation starting in 2019 which will be nice when it’s done.

We’ve been there 3 years and have been generally happy. I’m actually not enthusiastic about the pushed up renovation for multiple reasons including the fact that there is no currently identified swing space and I’m not keen on putting a the pk4 kid (my 2nd enters that year) on a bus twice a day plus losing the convenience of a neighborhood school. Right now I can walk 3 blocks and pop in to help at a party or be the mystery reader no big deal, but if it will involve driving and parking to do the same thing, that just won’t be a possibility as much as it is now.

So Eaton, Stoddert, and Key are all getting into renovations next year? Will we know what the swing spaces will be before the summer (when my DC has a chance of getting into any of these off the waitlist)?

"so that’s where we’ll have to send our child for K"

give me a break.

At the open house, the admin said that Eaton would take over the school that Hyde-Addison is currently using as a swing space. Is that not true anymore?

Key is getting additional trailers next year. Future addition (no indication of when yet) to the school. No off-site/relo for renovations.

NP. They haven’t said that to current families. At the last meeting they said they haven’t identified a swing space. If that’s changed, it would be nice to know.

Agree, that was pretty offensive.

Stoddert was renovated just a few years ago. How can that already be in a queue again?
