Help! Where can I find peanut-free cupcakes (preferably at a grocery store)?

Anonymous
I need to provide these for my daughter's class, and 2 kids have peanut allergies. I'm not the best at baking, so where can I find cupcakes that are peanut-free? (As in they weren't made on equipment that might have had peanuts on them.)

we've bought our birthday cupcakes at Giant. I wouldn't swear that they are made in a peanut free facility, but they seemed pretty common at her daycare, which was completely nut-free. Call the one closest to you and see what they say.

and the parents of those kids probably have recommendations for you. I think they would prefer something that is made in a commercial (controlled) kitchen than a home, where it is much easier to cross-contaminate. And the purchased cupcakes come with a nice, reassuring label for the teacher to reference.

I don't know, but in case you don't find go to GIANT (organic/natural food section) or Whole Foods (bake section) and buy one of those pre-packed cake mix penut free (the package says PEANUT FREE) and you only have to mix oil/eggs. You can aslo buy frosting (vanilla or chocolate) peanut free in those same sections.

The Lemonade Bakery makes them. They are based in Manassas but do deliver. They have a website.

My son has nut allergies, and I always buy the Giant kind. They may be "processed in a plant", etc, but basically they should have no nuts. You should be fine with that.

OP here.

Thanks for all of your responses! I'm going to call Giant and see if they give the verbal "no peanut" just in case it doesn't say the no peanut thing on the packaging of the cupcakes. Thanks again!

I tried Giant the other day - they said, "nope - they bake with nuts a lot"

Try Harris Teeter, Whole foods and Safeway.

Another big vote for the Lemonade Bakery. They specialize in allergen-free baking, deliver anywhere in the area, and are super nice. I would not let my peanut allergic child eat cupcakes from any of the grocery stores mentioned above. It's just too dangerous for us.

Parent of a peanut-allergic girl here. I would be utterly shocked if any grocery store sold ready-made peanut-free cupcakes. I have searched high and low, believe me. That said, Whole Foods and Giant sell Cherrybrook Kitchen mix that is peanut free (as someone else said, just add oil). Whole Foods also sells little pre-wrapped cakes that say "peanut free" on them. As a parent of an peanut-allergic child, in any event, I would never let my child eat something that another parent made or bought. There is just too much risk. On behalf of those parents, however, thanks for putting thought to it.

My child's preschool would never accept cupcakes from any the major grocery store chains (WF, Giant, Safeway, HT, SF, etc). Last year I called WF and was told the cupcakes were safe, then when I went to pick them up, the label had the usual disclaimer--may contain trace amounts of nuts, or used on shared equipment, or something like that.

I made cupcakes from scratch last week (2 dozen) and it really wasn't that big of a deal. We have egg allergies in his class too, so I used a recipe provided by another parent and it did not take long. The worst part was waiting the 30 minutes for them to cook (it was 11:30 pm when I started).

Please don't take a chance just because you "think" store bought are fine. If it was your child with an allergy wouldn't you want to know that the parent providing the food took every precaution possible?

try a mix that is nut free- it's actually easier than it seems to make them.

that's funny, my preschool won't accept homemade cakes or cupcakes, because they don't know exactly what is in them.

Another option is to skip cupcakes and get something like ice cream sandwiches (read label), ice cream cups, popsicles, or some cookies, such as oreos. Last year for DS' birthday I brought popsicles and the teacher put a candle in a ball a playdoh. The kids were all happy.

Some parents bring in cookies at my son's preschool.
