GMU is now the largest research university in VA with 4 campuses (35,000). JMU is at 22K but both have the same size undergraduate student body. I like the GMU Fairfax campus - it's very walkable and green. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Mason_University

I would rather attend JMU in the beautiful setting of Harrisonburg, VA. No question. But, like others have said, it depends a lot on what you're majoring in.

GMU has higher ACT and SAT scores. DC is soon to graduate in computer science. Econ is strong. All types of engineering is strong. Computer science is strong.

I have kids who went to both schools and loved them. Neither wanted to transfer anywhere.
