OMG She wore this?????

I know I will get flamed for going after Michelle Obama, and/or for posting this to politics and not the fashion page--but in all honesty if she was not the most symbolic politician's in the land's wife I guess I would probably not know who she is. And there is a tone-deafness here that startles me... I did not mind the shorts--though perhaps whilst hiking and not when exiting a plane with saluting dress Marines. However, I just don't see this as appropriate or honorific dress for a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony. Bare shoulders? A bright party dress? Did she have nothing in the closet?

I'm not sure if this post is really appropriate for the Political Discussion forum (maybe would be better in the Beauty forum or OT) but I gotta tell you, I'm with you on this one. Before clicking on the photo I expected to see nothing incongruent but this dress is definately not appropriate for the circumstance. And what is with the blue shoes????? I love the Obamas but sometimes Michelle's fashion compass is a little off-who dresses her? Does she have a stylist or and adviser or does she pick everything herself?

Yes, -I guess this image just really bothers me--not because I don't like the outfit (fashion) but because of its political (in)appropriateness. This ceremony, for all intents and purposes, is part of the work of government and leadership.

As a military family member, it left me saying, "Seriously?"

I truly believe that what Michelle Obama does on her personal time is her choice as an inspirational modern woman and reflects a bold personality and pretty great physique.

On matters of protocol though, I wish she would consult with the little blue-haired Washington ladies whose bread and better is avoiding such mishaps.

Even without protocol advice, who would not reach for a cardigan on the occasion of giving out the highest award for valor in the land? God bless Sergeant Monti.

I admire and respect Mrs. Obama's drive and intelligence, but never really understood why some people find her well-dressed. She has a great physique, but no dress sense (and often not a great posture). And you are right, that outfit was particularly inappropriate for the occasion.

That dress is not that bad. I find it kind of plain.

Non-issue.

I am usually a fan but think this shows a lack of respect for the deceased and the occasion.

Maybe it was the only thing she had that coordinated with his tie. It looks orange in this picture.
Shoes don't even complement the dress!
She needs to invest in some classic suits. The print dresses are getting old.

Agree. She has a nice body....but that should not be obvious at such an occassion. I like Obamas', worked on the campaign but find Michelle's choice of attire offputting at times. At times, a stylish suite is a respectful symbol.

Personally, I'm sick of hearing about Michelle Obama's cutting edge fashion sense. We've got the highest unemployment since WWII, foiled terrorist plots, insane dictators and soldiers dying. Stop trying to be the next Jackie O and dress more seriously; these are serious times.

I'm one of the posters who responded initially that this was a poor choice in terms of the particular event but I gotta confess I would love to have someone tell me what to wear according to occasion. Not every day of course, but I'm bright, accomplished, and somewhat in touch with culture, yet sometimes I'm baffled when it comes to what to wear to where. That's why I was asking if she has a stylist because if she does, and we are talking about the First Lady here, it's the stylist's fault. She's probably got bigger fish to fry then what dress to wear to what. I'm not saying she should completely disregard social ettiquete in terms of fashion, but shouldn't someone else be worrying about this on a daily basis? Which again, brings me to her stylist who every now and then has a small misstep-maybe she's a close family friend or something?

This was the time to break out the simple black dress with sleeves.

Actually the American public is starting to dress more colorfully. Style watchers say that it's part of the optimism that people are feeling right now. For example, pink ties are now in. So she seems in step with the public's own fashion choices. That said, you should dress in a manner respectful of the deceased and their family, and that dress didn't do the job.

I LOVE her fashion sense (or her advisor's fashion sense), but this particular dress is highly inappropriate for the occasion. Actually, I am pretty sure she has a fashion advisor...
I also sort of disagree with a PP that thinks Michelle should not try to look stylish in these hard times. Thank God that finally someone is trying to look good! Just because the country is not doing all that great at the moment, it is no reason for Michelle Obama to look like Hilary Clinton.

A first lady has a paid staff in the double digits, lucky duck. At some point, it is her responsibility hire someone for that staff who is qualified/with good advice. I am sure there is no shortage of protocol advisors in...Washington DC????

Whoever advises the Obamas on this kind of stuff just seems asleep at the wheel--remember the DVD set we presented to Gordon Brown in exchange for a "pen holder carved from the timbers of the sister ship to the White House desk"....??? That's just embarrassing.

I can only think Mrs. Obama must have had one of those major going out the door meltdowns to the tune of everything wearable is in a bag for the dry-cleaners and she got toothpaste on the last 'good' dress....
