Acceptance to UPenn M&T given likely letter from Yale?

Anonymous
DC got a likely from Yale. Can we assume that he will get into the UPenn M&T program?

What is a “likely”? Either you child got in EA or is still waiting to hear.

Lol def not

No, M&T only admits 50 people. Yale gives out 300-500 likely
letters a year. M&T is much more competitive

Not to mention half of the M&T students are ED admits, so it's more like just 25 for RD candidates. The yield is close to 100% for that program.

I don't think you can assume acceptance for any program that admits ~5% of applicants.

This. Ever. Grow up, OP.

Also what is a "likely letter"?

Schools send out likely letters to a select number of students that they really want saying that they will be accepted. These letters come before the RD decisions are out and those schools focus on courting the likely students.

My son was a heavily recruited football player. The likely letter meant admissions had reviewed his file and he met their qualifications. He received many "Likely" letters and it meant he would be accepted upon receipt of the application.

Not at all. Yale courts very strong STEM applicants with likely letters because it has a hard time retaining them due to the relative weakness of its STEM programs.

Penn M&T is the best program of its kind, takes 50 students overall, about 25 ED, 25 RD and its yield is super-high (90%+).

Penn M&T acceptance is quite harder than Yale acceptance and practically all admits choose Penn M&T over Yale. Many people even choose Penn M&T over Harvard, Stanford, MIT.

Maybe you could get your hopes up for M&T if you had gotten a likely from Stanford, but not Yale.

My DD received a likely letter from Yale accompanied by a Class of 2022 t-shirt and access to admitted students portal and she is not a STEM student.

Not all likelies are STEM students but many of them are. They also got the YES-W program to draw top STEM talent. https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2016/02/29/yes-w-draws-top-stem-students/

Penn M&T is insanely tough, quite tougher than Yale. I wouldn't read too much into it but obiously you have good chances if you are competitive enough to get a likely from Yale.

Yes it is. My kid got one from Columbia this year (non-athlete, sciency kid). OP clearly your student has something that Yale likes and so it is not unreasonable to think your student has a good shot at UPenn as well. Although it sounds like the particular program you are going for is even more selective.
