Bad breath and tonsil stones?

Anonymous
Since baby #2 I know I have worse breath. I am also pushing out white 'tonsil stones' or unbroken down food that sits in your tonsils at least twice a day. The tiny stones are the size of the smallest grape nut. They smell awful.

Has anyone had this problem and how have you treated it? I don't drink many fluids a day (12 oz) and wonder if that might be contributing to the problem?

Its just so awful!

I dont know how you treat them, My DH has them and he has a long dental tool that he uses to clean them out. I used to notice that his breath was really bad and after mouth rinse, brushing, nothing made it better...then we noticed the stones.

Since cleaning the stones out, I rarely ever notice that he has bad breathe.

Good to know others have gotten rid of them.
I have my flashlight out and a turkey baster right now to go searching!

NY Times had an article about this recently:

Wow! I'm glad it's not just me I notice them more right before I'm getting a cold. I thoughti was because my tonsils swell up so it's easier to get stuff stuck.

I have never heard of this before.

For me, flossing frequently and brushing my tongue helps. When I do get them, I use a Q-tip to reach back and sort of massage them out of the crypts.

How do you know you have them to begin with?

I had these and they eventually were so bad I ended up having a tonsillectomy at 30. Not fun.

Do kids get them? Almost everyone I know who's my age has had their tonsils and adenoids removed, so this is completely new to me.

I get them and the best thing to do is get them out when you can and to avoid dry mouth. I have post nasal drip which contributes, so I'm told to use saline but I've been too lazy to try it. I also drink lots of water. DO NOT use alcohol based mouthwash like listerine or scope as they dry your mouth out and make the environment in your mouth more suseptable. I can't remember the name of what I use instead but I get it at any CVS, I think it's "bio" something. Flossing regularly also helps. And so does gargling salt water after every meal. Mine have gotten a bit better, but if it gets worse again, I'm opting for getting my tonsils out without a doubt. They are a pain in the butt.

The first one I noticed was around the age of 10-12 - my mom thought it was a tonsil infection (white spot on tonsil) so we went to my ped who diagnosed the tonsil stone. I've actually been wondering if my own kids will get them, and if so, how to deal with that - mine are rare these days and pop out easily (I wash my hands and nails very carefully, then gently press below the stone), but I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that to someone else.

Does it feel like something hard is stuck in the back of your nose, where it connects to your throat? I always thought I occasionally felt dried mucous there but maybe it was these alien-sounding tonsil stones....
