What is the answer to this issue? I feel like there's an increasing problem and there are actual murders happening (I know this particular story is in NY but this is becoming a big problem in MD too!). I am very pro-immigration but I will admit that if I were a parent with a high-schooler in a neighborhood where MS13 kids were attending school I would seriously be thinking about taking my kid out of public school and putting them in private. But that just exacerbates the problem for the parents who are left. I do want to make sure people's rights aren't being totally violated, but we also have to consider the safety of the public school students. What can be done? |
| OP again: Does a public school have a right to expel a student for being a member of a gang? I read in the article that being in a gang is not per-se illegal, but do public schools have more ability to take that kind of information into account in terms of assessing whether a particular student might be a danger to the rest of the school community? |

It needs to be handled at the federal level. It's obvious that when you let unaccompanied minors from a gang-ridden hellhole into American neighborhoods that already have a gang presence, you are simply adding fuel to the fire.
The people who defend this on humanitarian grounds don't suffer the consequences. Their kids are safely attending schools like Whitman, Churchill and Sidwell Friends. |
not unless they’ve been convicted of a crime, unfortunately. |
that is so true - those people never would stoop to putting their child in a school with actual illegal immigrants. |
Wasn't the drunk driving deaths at Churchill? There have been recent issues at Whitman. It would seem that it is more dangerous there. |
| I don’t think this is true. Immigrants are just hard working people who want better for their families. Did you know that crime is actually lower in areas with high concentrations of immigrants? So many xenophobes. |
| This article is about NY. I’m not denying their may be an issue in MCPS, but until you post some data sources for MCPS it is hard to have a meaningful discussion. |
What you say is true for legal immigrants, but not illegal immigrants. |

For MCPS, here are the official regulations on gang activity: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/jhgra.pdf

| OK, so why doesn't Trump go after them instead of farmers and store workers with a 20 yr old DUI record, but otherwise a model citizen? I'm serious. We have finite resources. Let's go after the bad hombres like he said. Instead they raid 7/11s and other businesses deporting workers. |
+1. Get the little dirtbags out of here and leave hard working people alone. This was the Obama administration policy. |

| To the question of whether parents should pull their kids out of school: if you are middle class/affluent and non-Hispanic, your kid has about the same likelihood of being affected by a gang at a big public school as at a small private. Zero. MS 13 is absolutely a problem, but NOT because little Brayden and Claire are in danger of being recruited by them. |
No, PP is right. Illegal immigrants also commit less crime here on America soil than American-born people do. News outlets just tend to sensationalize their crimes more. |
