Why can't you spell her nickname the way we do.

This is to my MIL... who never liked DD's nickname and always spells it some cutesy way ending in an "i". This morning she brought over a reading chair with DD's name spelled incorrectly. DD is 2.5 and beginning to read a few sight words including her name.

It just bugs me. It is like we call her Susie and MIL insists it be spelled Suzi.

I thought you meant like, Vicky vs. Vicki, where it's a spelling difference. I think Susie vs. Suzi is a big enough difference that it's not misspelling, it's a different nickname your DD has from her grandmother. That's less bothersome to me because it won't confuse the kid about spelling and letters, and more of a "you can have this thing together" issue.

Both pronounced the same. It is the same nickname- MIL just refuses to go with our typical, traditional spelling of her nickname.

What? Are you pronouncing Susie and Suzi differently? That said, so what; people misspelled my nn accidentally but I still learned to spell it. I’m 46 and my mom’s side still misspells it. No biggie.

Would you like to switch grandmas? We named our daughter Millicent. The first girl in each generation gets named that, going back many generations.

My mother's name is Millicent and MIL feels that Baby Millicent was named after her. She is bitter the baby was not named after her, so refuses to call her Millicent. Thus, she calls her Tillie. Millicent ignores her because she hears Tillie and probably thinks "well that's not me" and MIL gets very upset. We have told her repeatedly to try calling her by her name, Millicent, but she continues on with Tillie.

well I'm with you OP and think it's weird for grandma to misspell their grandchild's name. it's really not that hard!

My daughter is Emme. So it can be spelled lots of ways. She is now almost 4 and just tells people it's E M M E! Your daughter will correct her at some point.

Like "Mini" instead of "Minnie" or "Dani" instead of "Danny"?

Yeah, it would irritate me too especially when she has stuff like a chair personalized with the wrong spelling.

Did they give you a personalized chair with the wrong spelling of your name on it?

Ugh, that stinks. Sorry, op. Be a little stinker and start spelling her name incorrectly. Or give the gift back and say the name is spelled wrong.

Have you ever called MIL on it? What does she say?

Hear you, OP. My name is Amy. Not Ami. I am not an "i" type.

OP here. She pretends that she forgot and then says, " it's just so much prettier... [her way]. When DH told her that DD's name was spelled wrong on the chair, she smiled and said, " oops!"

Depends how big the personalize chair is.
