| Last week, an in office ultrasound confirmed an empty gestational sac that measured 6 weeks, 3 days. I am 38, 3rd pregnancy (2 healthy babies for first two), and it was a vaginal ultrasound. She didn’t check my hcg levels at that appt but I’m nauseous, tired, and have many pregnancy symptoms. I have a 10 day follow up ultrasound to confirm. I may have ovulated a week late, so my 7 week appointment may have been 6. The doctor seemed pretty convinced it was BO, wherein we would need to discuss a D&C, pill or natural miscarriage. Thoughts on those? Or, was anyone surprised to find that there was a healthy baby on a follow-up ultrasound? This 10 day wait is torture! |

I'm sorry. I had one. Diagnosed at 7 weeks, but had another ultrasound at 9 weeks to confirm. I gave it another week and when nothing happened and I was still having nausea and other symptoms, I took cytotec to induce miscarriage. It was pretty intense but over fairly quickly. No regrets.
Give it the 10 days, because sometimes there are miracles or mistakes, but prepare yourself that doc is likely right. |

The 10 day wait is torture and I’ve been through it twice. One was a positive outcome, one was not, so I would prepare for the doctor to be correct and mentally assume that this is a blighted ovum.
Of the treatment choices, I had the D&C and am glad I did. Then it was just over. I could plan for it with work, took a few days for my physical and mental health, and everything was done. What sucks is that you still have all the pregnancy symptoms but no real pregnancy—with a D &C, all that ends as soon as you have it done. That’s just my experience though, surely others can chime in with theirs. |
| My Blighted Ovum is 9 and a half years old now and a very active and healthy kid. If you aren't sure of your ovulation dates then I wouldn't panic b.c it has a chance to go either way. Fingers crossed for you. |
| I am really sorry OP - the waiting is the worst! If you ovulated late then it's definitely possible it's viable. Keeping fingers crossed for you. The good news is that most people go onto have a successful pregnancy even after a miscarriage; I now have a three-month-old after four MCs in a row. |

I was told I had a blighted ovum, and they scheduled me for a D&C. Reading this thread is making me think I should have waited to have the procedure done??
Enough about me. Good luck, OP. Let us know what happens. |
Same here, and I've always wondered if I should have waited - though we were sure of my dates. Anyway, I hope things work out for you, OP, and I'm sorry that the waiting is so stressful. I found lots of good advice on here when I had my miscarriage/D&C, and lots as well for a subsequent pregnancy. |
| At 6w3d there should be a yolk sac, fetal pole and even HB. I had a blighted ovum. Went in at 7 weeks, empty gestational sac measuring 6w2d. Went back 2 weeks later for follow up US and it was still empty, but the gestational sac did grow by a few days. Decided against a D&C and had cytotec inserted vaginally after waiting another 2 weeks for it to happen naturally, but my body never got the message to MC. Waited a full cycle before trying again, and got pregnant with DD. |
This. If it was earlier than 6w3d there may be a possibility that it’s viable. But otherwise you should have seen something. |
Agree with this. If you weren't seeing at least yolk sac and fetal pole at this point (and really heartbeat is detectable at this point too) then it wouldn't have turned out well, OP. Any chance your dates are off? I'm sorry for your loss. |
| So sorry you are going through this OP. |
| I’m sorry Op, it’s a hard wait. They really should have offered to do some blood work, it would at least give you more insight if the numbers were going up or down. My “blighted ovum” is now 6yo, but I went into the u/s knowing I had wonky cycles and couldn’t/shouldn’t be going by LMP for dating. The tech was completely uninterested in my theory, but my midwife knew better and offered more compassion and hope for me and just checked in with me to make sure that I hadn’t started bleeding in between. I actually switched MFM U/S places because I thought the delivery of information had been so poor. They definitely treated my remarks with a pat on the head and a strong Rec for doing a D/C vs waiting out the 10 days. |
| I recently did a round of IVF (so I was sure of the dates) and they couldn’t see anything at 6 weeks 4 days. I have had two previous c-sections, which makes your uterus farther back and the placenta was attached at the very top of the uterus. By 7 weeks, you could see the sac and by 8, the beginning of the baby. Definitely give it another ultrasound, especially if you couldn’t get good visualization. |
OP here. After a long 10 days, the follow-up ultrasound showed a baby (heartbeat, fetal pole, sac). Still in shock, but very happy. I am a week behind what was originally thought. Although the sac originally measured 6.3 weeks, I was only 5.3 weeks. At that time it can be difficult to see anything and I also have a tilted uterus that may have contributed to difficulty with an early ultrasound. I appreciated all of the helpful comments, and want to share in case anyone is searching this thread/issue in the future. |
| What great news!!! I'm very happy for you, op. I had a blighted ovum a few years ago and did a lot of reading on it. A tilted uterus can often lead to a misdiagnosed blighted ovum, and those women in particular should be cautious with it. |
