Spousal dispute over TV in living room

Anonymous
We downsized to a smaller house that doesn't have a "family room." TV is in small study off kitchen but room is crowded with four people, another in spacious loft upstairs but not convenient. Main living room space is pretty much unused, though beautifully decorated. We've fought over this for several years. I'm about ready to just install TV when he's not home and he can get over it! Any suggestions?

If you have a small home, I don’t see how a spacious loft can be so far away that it’s inclnvenient. It sounds like you just want your tv where you want it, and he doesn’t want a screen in everyone’s face all the time. I’d be pissed off if I worked hard to preserve screen free time for the family and my spouse undermined that.

If I like tv, we have tv. If he likes tv, we have tv. In every room. And if one of us doesn't like it, we have our own rooms. With headphones.

You people fight over the dumbest things. Serenity.

Use an iPad in the living room.

I’m with your husband. We don’t have a tv on the main floor. That space is for eating/relaxing/talking. We have a tv in the basement playroom and DH and I have iPads we use upstairs.

OMG. This isn't a big deal.

We have a tiny house, and I would not be happy with a TV in my elegant living room, but honestly... if that's what my spouse really wants, I wouldn't fight it. There are more important issues in life!

Says someone with tons of rooms.
Talking about small homes here.

How small is your home that you can fit a tv?

Currently we don't have a TV, or a couch, because of space concerns, and because we're happy without them.

But OP probably just has enough space for one, hence the argument with her spouse.

Get a TV cabinet or armoire that can keep it out of sight.

Would help if you tell us why he is objecting. Wants to limit screen time? Aesthetics? Noise?

We have a small one in our main living room. If you're not using that room much, I'd look for a way to put one in so that it's not prominent. A friend of mine has theirs on a wall, covered by a painting on a track that they can slide over to expose the tv.

This was my compromise with my XDH. I have never had TV in the bedroom and never wanted to. He worked night shift and said it helped him fall asleep when he got home. So as long as I didn’t have to see it or watch it this was OK with me.

What's your spouse's objection to a TV in the living room? If it's that it would be too obnoxious and take over the room, get a cabinet with doors that close, or find somewhere that it isn't too obtrusive. I hate that our 40" living room TV kind of takes over the room, but there really isn't anywhere to put it that it doesn't do that, so I'm kind of stuck.
