Favorite off the beaten path/hidden gem place to go

My favorite place has been the Red Fish Lake Lodge in Stanley Idaho

Not that unknown but figured I'd brag that I'm going to the Champlain Valley in a few days and I'm so excited. My friend lives out in the country and has a view of Killington from his kitchen. Sometimes it smells like cows, though...

If I listed my hidden gem here then it would become too well known. That's part of the appeal of a place being a hidden gem.

Oh please. Too well known from posting on dcum in a thread that will be buried soon?

It's not like it will be featured in the NYT Travel section.

There's nowhere on the Oregon Coast that's crowded by my judgment of "crowded."

Smells like Vt in the Spring is what we used to say about that smell, but it sure is beautiful

The Washita National Battlefield. I walk the trail multiple times every summer, and then sit at the river and just be quiet and listen.

If I told you it would no longer be a hidden gem...

Romania. Forget the images of grim Bucharest and the gypsies. It's a fascinating country with beautiful countryside in Transylvania and in Northern Romania. The countryside looks like it'straight out of medieval Europe with fortified churches and wildfowl running around the lanes of the villages. The cities of Transylvania were built during the Austro-Hungarian empire and are gorgeous and historic. The painted monasteries of northern Romania are a true delight. Food is reasonably good and the travel expenses extremely cheap. We were completely blown away by Romania because it far exceeded our expectations (we found it more enjoyable than Hungary).

I also find Oman pretty nifty. If ever doing a layover in Dubai on the way somewhere else, it's worth it to break up the journey with a few days in Oman.

Pancake Rock on the west coast of the South Island in New Zealand. At high tide the waves explode up through the rock formations and it sounds like jet engines. If high tide is near sunset the place is empty and the view is breathtaking.

Yeah but you have to consider the quality as well as the quantity.

If even a handful of the entitled, self-important, out of touch gobshites who frequent this forum showed up at your favorite vacation spot it would ruin it faster than 1,000 average people.

Very interesting. I am going to add Romania to my list now. I second Oman.

+1. One of the best things about my hidden gem is that it lacks DCUMs and their offspring.

So many places on the west coast of the south island are just incredible. My wife and I were the only people at Jackson Bay, which is the southernmost point reachable by road. A pod of little Hector's dolphins came to visit us. It was magical. Thanks for reminding me of this experience, PP.
