Just Make Reed an Option School Already

If APS has too many seats in the NW quadrant why don't we move ATS to the new Reed school. It would (1) free up great neighborhood seats further east in the county where we need them (2) help ease the move for ATS to get a new school that could allow for larger performance space for their assemblies and whatever else they always insist they must have (3) keep the choice school more centrally located than Nottingham or Tuckahoe--no need to cross Lee Hwy or Sycamore or Metro area (4) would not disrupt existing school communities and (5) allow for expansion of ATS to a 725 seat school to take more from the lottery

IF we need an option school move, it should be to a NEW SCHOOL LOCATION. Much easier in terms of boundary changes too. Not an existing location. We need to do what is best for the entire county, not just Westover. I know they will yell and scream about their traffic and their promises. But no one, including the Board, appreciated the long term consequences of making Reed a neighborhood school when that decision was made. There was no full vetting of this question. This school doesn't even exist yet. Why are we allowing it to turn the entire county upside down?

Are you a Tuckahoe parent?

Tuckahoe makes more sense as an option school.

Sorry the writing is on the wall for Tuckahoe - the walkable community is minimal especially when Nottingham is walkable for many of them.

Nottingham can’t take all those kids. There are well over 150 Tuckahoe walkers. We are already at capacity with specials on carts and trailers again.

Tuckahoe isn’t pushing this. We want to save our school but we have future Reed Families too.

Sorry, but there should not be an future "Reed families" yet. A neighborhood school was not needed at that location, and their lobbying has resulted in bad planning that is costing the county a ton of money in resources and eventual moving costs. Not to mention what this will do to other school boundaries. Make Reed a choice school like it should have been made in the first place. The SB is being financially irresponsible for putting a school where it is not needed.

Obviously. No one with common sense would make the school with the most walkers in the whole county a school without walkers.

Westover is being so selfish. They kicked out the teachers’ kids and disabled kids so that they could tear down a 9 year old building to save their sledding hill.

If they would accept Standalone, we could keep preschool kids in the current building and they would get their previous school.

I love how in another discussion Westover Parents are now back down from 600 walkers to saying that they can’t do standalone option because there would be too many cars. Which is it - are you 80% walkers or driving the precious snowflakes?

Tell McK at 800 and climbing that we don’t have a need. Stop being selfish, Tuckahoe parent.

I am not a Tuckahoe parent, I am actually south arlington parent who believes our school system has a fiscal shortfall and is not spending its money wisely.

Does the Reed school solve McKinley's need? If so, then why does Reed create too many seats?

Westover didn’t kick in it the preschool. APS did when they decided to build another school. The “too many cars” post r doesn’t want anything in that space. Most neighbors aren’t worried.

Reed is going to take A LOT of McK kids. It’s also going to take a lot of Tuckahoe and save a lot of bus money.

You are taking about a person with no kids. The parents KNOW there are more than 600 kids.

Maybe consider not maxing out every single school to breaking point? Leave them both as neighborhood schools - unless one school would be nearly empty. Leave room to grow!!
