I've been going to Aqua fit 3 times per week. It's an ideal activity for me because I have brittle knees and feel stiff most of the time. I am only 29 and I had Lyme disease in my early 20s. It has changed me forever. I feel a little silly because the majority of the classes are all much much older than me. The instructor is really fun though. I may keep my 1 time per week orange theory membership. I've been trying yoga and orange theory and it's just too much for me. I end up with knee problems. I am also thinking about taking a swimming lesson so I can improve my stokes. It's been many years since I swam laps. I am in good shape. I don't have issues with weight. I wish I could do a lot of these activities my friends do but my body feels so damn old. |
OP here: Sorry about the typos. I am home with a stomach bug today. I am not feeling my best. |
OP, if it works for you and you enjoy it, stick with it! It’s better than forcing yourself to do something that is not fun or hurts you that you end up quitting. If it helps you get fitter and stronger maybe you can branch out eventually but I see no reason to stop going just because it’s not the trendy exercise studio du jour. |
Keep it up. Swimming is great. Old people are usually really nice too! |
Maybe try the classes at different times? |
Great choices. Hydro pilates and aqua zumba are also good options. |
I feel you, sister. I have hyper mobility, which basically means my joints are super flexible and I get injured very easily with any kind of high impact exercise. I’d love to be one of the cool kids who runs races, does OFT, or hot yoga, but I get injured every time. Swimming, regular gentle yoga, and Pilates are the only exercise I can do consistently without injury. I also walk daily. Like you I have no weight issues and this is just about fitness. It sucks but I have to respect my limits. I’ve actually thought about water aerobics but the times are bad for my schedule at the pool near me. If it works for you, do it! |
I took a class regularly when I was pregnant - not a pregnant class but a normal one with all the old ladies.
The instructor was the best. She showed us her ‘before’ picture. She was hugely obese, and started water aerobics, and was then a fit instructor. Just always upbeat and happy to be there. I was by far the youngest, and probably among the least in shape! Those old ladies had been doing it for a while and were awesome. I felt like I had a serious workout at the end, but my body never felt that sore the next day. It was my favorite. I found a class in my new town, but they only have daytime classes, no sitter, etc. |
Op here. I also attend aqua fitness when I was pregnant. The ladies were so nice to me. They even came to visit me at the hospital when I gave birth! My water actually broke while I was in class. I've been attending the YMCA classes during the day. It's right next to my office so I go during lunch time. |
Have you tried reformer Pilates? It’s great and low impact. |
Aren't those classes like a million dollars per session? |
Where are you located? There are some studios that use ClassPass, and it comes to about $12 a session. Also try the MindBody app, lots of studios have intro type specials and other deals. I tend to pay $10-$15 per class, and I go 1-2 times a week. Might be a good supplement to your aqua fit! |
There are water fitness classes at my gym and the instructor is good (superfit) and the participants' ages are all over the place. You only think it's old people fitness because that's how it is where you go--it's not like that everywhere. |
I don't get it. What's your question?
So, you found a class that works well for you despite the taboo of water aerobics being a senior citizen class? Great! So stick with it. What's the problem? |
Don't be nasty pp. |
