Should diversity be a factor in Olympic team selection?

Yes or no? Why or why not?

I'm a bit old school, but shouldn't the fastest time/best athlete always win, regardless of their background?

What do you mean "a factor"? The fact that the team, which was put together through meritocracy, happens to be more diverse is great. It's representative of the country it's supposed to represent, and shows that the pipeline has widened.

That people like Fox Vice Presidents see diverse Olympians and assume that a more qualified white man somehow got cheated out of his due is predictable BS.

They did, you racist tool.

I think that's a stupid question. I can't fathom how one would even make an argument FOR that.

Yes, you run much faster, but we NEED another white sprinter for diversity.

I am not White, diversity SHOULD NOT be a factor all, let the best man/woman win and go. Merit all the way!

No. It should be, and generally is, strictly performance and results based. Should we pick a white sprinter just because they are white? No. As long as it is not specifically excluding races, religions, income, sexual preference, etc then it should continue to be the top athletes in each sport.

Could you at least try to make sense before spouting your crap?

No? Too bad.

I think OP is just trying to start something.

Although it isn't always in the sports that are subjective, eg judged. But that's a totally different argument anyway.

This is a straw man, unless OP has an example of someone who was faster/stronger/better but was edged out based on race/ethnicity/religion/sexual identity.

The assumption that diversity = a less qualified minority cheated a white dude out of his just desserts is what underlies all these bigots' consternation at a diverse Olympic team. They don't even dogwhistle anymore, they just see a nonwhite athlete and start crying about how "the better athletes" aren't there anymore. No evidence, no logic, just "white people are better; if they're not there the brown people must have cheated somehow."

No way. Best performer gets to go. Its all about the medals

Not in selection, but training and support could be increased to support diversity in the pipeline. It takes a lot of money to buy the equipment, train full time, etc. More support of diverse athletes while training could create a more diverse team in the end.

No, the quickest time/highest score should make the team.
