Anyone know how many new rising 9th graders are accepted at Sidwell and Potomac each year? I have applied for both.
What is the percentage of admission at both schools? I heard around 3-5%, 30 kids for 900 applicants. Any truth to that? |
900 applications? I highly doubt these schools are getting 900 applications for 9th. Where did you hear that number? |
This has to be a joke-900? |
Irvin goes aboir 400 |
Haha spelling “fixed” for the above: I’d guess about... |
I think at max it's about 10:1.
It sound like overwhelming odds but every year I know a lot of kids who get in from our local public. They're bright and nice kids but not out-of-the-norm brilliant or impressive. |
^^^Which public are you referring to? |
That odds would make these school on par with selective colleges! I don't think so. Potomac is about 35% - 40% acceptance, Sidwell probably around 20-25%. Before any Potomac parents out there start throwing a fit, reason for the higher percentage is because historically Potomac's yield is not as high as Sidwell's (or the GDS, NCS/STA bunch). Potomac, as much as it wants to be, just does not have as much name recognition as Sidwell. Not a reflection that it is a bad school, so calm down. From my experience dealing with families from all different private schools in the DMV, Potomac families, by far, have the largest chip on their shoulders. ![]() |
Its all relative, OP as I would say the laregst chip can routinely be found on the GDS shoulders. -Cathedral parent |
Can we make it a thread rule that anyone posting a specific number has to provide a source? Aside from accepting 30 9th grade students, which they publish on the website, this is all coming from nowhere. |
And we can all say that the parents who make statements such as these are those I hope are not at my school. ![]() |
I have heard 20% acceptance rate at Sidwell, |
Honestly, I can't see how anyone would have any clue unless they asked admissions directly, which probably nobody would (though I don't think it would be outrageous to do so). Numbers like 1:8 and 1:10 float around DCUM, but I have idea as to their validity. Not that it helps in this case, or perhaps in any other, but in the acceptance letter for GDS PK/K last year, it said they got several hundred applicants. They left it vague as to whether that was for LS as a whole, for LS and MS or what. |
From a trusted source, Potomac varies from as low as 12.5% to as high as 25% on a yearly basis. I would equate that to an 18% average. Think about it. Best Private in NoVa and folks do not want to commute to DC a lot of the time. Sidwell has some competition from NCS/St. Albans and even GDS and Maret. Please believe me on this percent. It is not static and varies based on 8th grade attrition. How many go public? How many go board, etc. |
I don't know app number for Potomac and Sidwell but I know when we applied GDS was 275 and told us that they were around 30-35% acceptance. Their class size is 50, Sidwell is 30 and Potomac targets 30-40. I gotta imagine Potomac and Sidwell will be much lower than 30-35 as a result because GDS loses some to Sidwell more than Sidwell loses to GDS. |
