Yogurts w/o a crap load of sugar

Anonymous
My kids occasionally get flavored yogurt for dessert. I shop at TJ's because I can walk there. All their yogurts have 13 grams and up of sugar. At that rate, I might as well give them a candy bar. Any recs for flavored yogurt without an obscene amount of sugar? I also can walk to a WF and Giant.

Just get plain yogurt and add as much jam/honey/fruit/whatever as you are comfortable with. Most sweetened brands have a lot of sugar.

I always buy a large container of whole milk Greek Yogurt (the whole is much smoother than the lowfat/nonfat). I then mix it with a cup of the flavored Greek yogurt. If my kids want Mango yogurt, I split the small container into 2-3 small bowls. I then add the plain yogurt and mix it. Plain Greek Yogurt is great for other things too. I use it as a substitute for sour cream and often add it to my kids' not-so-healthy mac and cheese to increase the protein.

OMG your poor kids. Yogurt ain't dessert.

The Siggi's brand has 9-11 grams of sugar, depending on the flavor. It's pricier, but they now sell a 12 pack at Costco for $12.99, so on par with the less expensive brands.

I get the high fat Siggis for my son (and me). Tastes better and way more protein, and less sugar.

Yes Siggis. But I'll add, my 3 year old hates it and won't eat it. So yeah, less sugar but she's also not eating it. We have better luck mixing in some jam to plain yogurt.

She does like those yogurt tubes. Stonyfield makes one that only has 6 grams of sugar. But I think part of why it's low is that it's not THAT much yogurt. It's also 2% yogurt which annoys me. I'd rather have the fat/protein to counteract the sugar and make it a filling snack.

I buy the tubes to throw in lunchboxes, and the Annie's and Chobani ones have far less sugar than GoGurt.

Will have to check the Stoneyfield tubes again, because I also thought that was higher....

Siggi strawberry has 12 g sugar.

Siggi’s Triple Cream, 9% milkfat, 4 oz. yogurts have 8 grams of sugar and 9 grams (18%) of protein. I rationalize that my kid wouldn’t be getting 9 grams of protein from a regular dessert. Plus, he doesn’t eat junk/candy/sweets regularly - everything in moderation! Even if you add freeze-dried fruit (with just fruit, no added sugar) to regular yogurt, the fruit adds a ton of sugar just by virtue of being fruit.

Another vote for mixing/ flavoring your own! We do both - also buy TJ whole milk Greek yogurt and mix in some of their full-fat flavored yogurt (these aren't Greek yogurt).
Or we just do the plain Greek yogurt with frozen berries and a drizzle of honey.

Pretty much every day my kids get plain whole milk yogurt with frozen blueberries, mango, or raspberries in their lunch with just a tiny bit of honey. Whole milk yogurt is somewhat sweet as it is, and the me
Ted fruit makes it just right.

We give DS, and ourselves, Chobani flavored yogurts. But those have even more sugar, so I guess that won't help you. I feel okay about it given that it's at most a serving per day (more likely a few times a week) and it's a good protein source.

My DH claims he checked ALL THE TUBES to find the low sugar one. Because he knows that sugar in yogurt is one of My Things. Ha.

But I don't think our store has Annie's or Chobani in tubes. So he might have just been comparing it to Yoplait/Gogurt.

I just bought Chobani “a hint of Madagascar vanilla & cinnamon” flavor. It’s 5.3 oz, 12g of protein and 9g of sugar. They had other “hint of...” flavors as well.
