WaPo Ask Tom?

Anonymous
Why does he recommend the same two restaurants every week? Surely everyone has heard of Jaleo and Rashika by now.

I think he has a limited range. However, I've also noticed that most of the questions that come in for the Q&A pretty much seem to be the same question asked 15 different ways. It could be that there is just a really small market for his schtick and he does what he does to keep that market open. I appreciate some of his comments although I admit I frequently don't agree with him because I think his reviews are so particular to his own tastes and preferences.

Tom lost all credibility as a food critic when he name a mediocre pizza restaurant a top-10 restaurant in DC.
Anonymous
I never understood why he relentlessly promotes Rasika every chance he gets. It's a good restaurant but not all that great.

Jessica Sidman, Tim Carman, Tyler Cowen are all better critics and more adventurous eaters imho

No, it was All Purpose. Timber barely qualifies as pizza.

Is it like flatbread? Didn't quite understand the Bon Appetit love for it. Is it worth it to make the trek?

My apologies. I was confused. Timber was listed in the fall dining guide, but it was All-Purpose that had an excellent (and gushing) rating from Tom.

Rasika is the best Indian food I’ve ever had. And I rarely read his column.
Did he really recommend Jaleo? That’s nothing special at all.
Anonymous
To Indians, Rasika isn't great.
I tried 2 restaurants based on his recs and I didn't like them.

+1 He’s been around for too long. We need someone with a more adventurous palate. I get better recs when The NY Times does their 36 hours in DC feature
