Do you leave tips for hotel breakfasts

Anonymous
We have status and so the $15 pp is waived. DH said he has always left a tip I haven't ever. We got married last year and right now with another couple who agree with me.

The other couple "agree" with you?

You're treating it like it's a definite right-wrong answer. Some people tip in this situation. Most people don't. It doesn't make your DH wrong, if he's more generous.

The same is true of leaving money for the hotel maids. Most people do not.

Agree. I don't tip unless they are bussing and/or the tables as well. If they are just restocking the buffet, I don't tip.

I always tip the maids though.

If it’s buffet that’s included like at Hampton Inn then no tip. If it’s table service then yes.

Agree with this. There is a range of service models with hotel breakfasts. If it’s a McDonalds quality setting where you bus your own table, no tip. If it’s a sit down service with a waiter and menu, tip.

If I see service staff (and I always do), I tip.

What are you basing this on? Everyone in my family, my circle, my husband’s family, my coworkers tip. It’s pretty sleazy not to do so.

Agree. Most of these places seem to offer either a la carte or buffet and have wait staff who serve a la carte and coffee.

Who pours or refills your coffee? Tip.

You seem to be basing it on the fact that you don't have to pay. Tip, you cheapskate.

Just because something is free doesn’t mean you don’t owe a tip.

Also when something is marked down (2 for 1 apps on Tuesdays) you tip as if it weren’t.

I am guessing OP does in fact mean a proper sit down bussed table drinks served affair and hasn’t clarified because she’s wrong.

If breakfast is the complimentary breakfast, than no tips because the next group will fill your seat quicker than the workers getting to the table. If you feel you want to give a tip, give it directly to the workers.

If it's a paid separately breakfast and you are being served by a specific person(s), and have to either pay or charge to the hotel, than, you give tips.

Are they bringing you coffee, juice, etc.? Clearing dishes? Then tip. Just because you have status doesn't mean you shouldn't tip.
