Sorry this might be TMI; staying regular while traveling

Anonymous
I will be traveling with a large group internationally soon. We've already been told that where we are going, there won't always be access to coffee. Also, that this is kind of a "meat and potatoes" kind of place, with not much fresh fruit and veggies. Where we are staying is kind of remote, not a big city or anything, so I can't count on buying anything or just going off on my own to get my own food there.

I've read a few other articles that mostly suggest eating foods high in fiber (again, I won't have a lot of choice over my food), exercise (we will be very active while there, so this is good!) and staying hydrated (this also will not be a problem.)

I've thought of bringing along prunes. I know Sunsweet makes little individually wrapped ones. Has anyone else done this?

Bring a box or two of Fiber one granola bars (they're so good) and raise bran (I eat it dry, but good with milk).

I doubt you can bring in fresh fruit to a foreign country (unless you purchase it at the airport) , so find an airport Starbucks/cafe and pick up a few apples which are hardy and stay fresh for a long time and put in your bag as you are exiting the airport towards your cab.

Drink plenty of water too.

Curious where you're going where there's no coffee (can't you bring that with???), everything is meat and potatoes, and no fresh fruit or veggies.

I have the same problem regardless of what food is available. MY system just shuts down. I found that taking fiber caps and even drinking prune juice helps a lot.

I wouldn’t try to bring any fruits internationally, even if they are individually wrapped. I would take a fiber supplement with you if your worried about being regular. Try what ever you decide on before your trip to see how it affects you. Also, I would pick something up for digestive upset since this is a new diet for you.

Where are you going OP? This is a pretty diverse forum so likely someone here is from the place you are going or has been there before and can give some solid advice.

My thoughts are to take some Starbucks Via packets with you, as long as you have access to clean hot water you'll have coffee.

Take some Fiber One bars and drink lots of water.

Take some Ex-Lax in case you end up needing it.

I travel to third world countries for work a few times a year. I take 2 of the 400mg Magnesium soft gels at dinner time and poop first thing in the morning, every morning.

I had a job with a lot of business travel and my system shuts down for days every time. It’s awful.

Here’s the nitty gritty answer that you may not like: suppositories.

They are painful and gross, but so is constipation and oral laxitives or even just loading with fiber mean you can’t control when it will happen. The suppository is just you alone for an hour. Bring them with you just in case.

Godspeed friend, may your body not betray you.

OP here. Awesome, thanks! I am going to Chile (I'm the OP of the JFK-SCL thread from yesterday,) after landing in SCL I will be going to a more remote area. I was kind of surprised when they said there won't always be coffee available!

I was a little worried about the fresh fruit thing too--but I was hoping the fact they are factory wrapped might make a difference. On the same note, what about KIND bars? I was planning to pack a few in my bag for emergency snacks--but of course they have bits of dried fruit and nuts...

I'm going to pick up a bottle of those magnesium soft gels. Thank you!

Bring some probiotics and maybe some Starbucks VIA instant coffee packs? I'm sure you'll have access to hot water, no?

Fiber bars, granola bars, etc.

Bring colace. And Imodium. Cipro if you can.

A PP mentioned it already, but I was going to suggest bringing some of those instant coffee packs if you'll have access to hot, drinkable water.

I travel with suppositories as well. Even when I eat/drink normally on traveling, my body gets uptight sometimes.
