Swiss Alps vs Austrian Alps...where to go and stay?

Help us out. The family has been clambering for trip to the Alps and we're in the planning stages but I find this a bit overwhelming. Family of 4. Moderate skiers. Budget for lodging is appro $300-400/night (or Euro equivalent). 1 week.

I have been all over the place. I love Iscghl and St. Anton personally. St Anton is part of a valley with St. Cristof and Lech, more terrain to traverse than Ischgl. In Ischgl I usually stay at Hotel Trofana. St Anton area I actually stayed in St Cristof but probably wouldn’t do that with kids bc there isnt as much to do outside the hotel.

We like the quaint town with a city center.

For our first trip we used a ski travel service which was very helpful. Maybe see if Tour de Sport does European destinations. We went to Zell am See in Austria which is a lovely town and stayed in a B&B type place. There tend to be far more of those than big hotels in European resorts. I haven't skied in Switzerland for a long time. We've skied in France several times but that's not helpful to you.

We are partial to Austria - it is also less expensive than Switzerland. Zelll am See is a nice area (especially beautiful in summer!!) and also close to Kaprun, which is a glacier and always has snow even during warmer winters.

Zell am See seems like the place to go.

We had a really good time in Interlaken. We took a day to go into the mountains and go skiing and visit the place where a James Bond movie was filmed. It was a very very adventurous journey to get there, but so much fun. Switzerland is very beautiful.

Switzerland is so expensive. We stick to Chamonix, which is just on the French side, but the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass gets you a huge variety of ski areas that include Verbier & Courmayeur, if you want a day in Switzerland or Italy. https://www.chamonix.net/english/lift-systems/lift-passes

That lets you shake things up and not just do the same runs all the time. If you’re up for red runs, you’ll have more than plenty to choose from. Plenty of gentler slopes are at Les Houches and Megève (which are also good for white outs, as they’ve got some tree coverage), but still all within the slope pass parameters.

We’ve gone to Chamomix as well, and love it. We’ve used the pass for Cormayeur, which is one of my favorites, but didn’t go to Verbier. Haven’t done the Vallee Blanche yet - kids were too young last time we went - but want to do it next time. The downside of Cham compared to some other European areas is that the ski areas are not interconnected.

OP, France is a good option for skiing. We are thinking about Italy for next year.

It can’t be any more abnormal what Vail charges at their mountains in the US...

Not a skier--but did go to Grindelwald with a group of skiers many years ago. Grindelwald is the ski town near Interlaken. If you go to ski, Grindelwald would be a better choice than Interlaken (which is a very pretty town). Grindelwald is a quaint town and set up for skier. PP is correct about the James Bond movie--I'm trying to remember which one--I'm pretty sure it was a very early one--probably Sean Connery.

It's Schilthorn. "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" - George Lazenby. Did it last summer. Loved that area.
