Travel to Mexico

Traveling to Mexico for a family vacation is becoming and wise as backpacking near the Iranian border or taking spring break trip to North Korea.

Cool story, bro.

WTF? Yet another narrow minded post. I'm not sure what party of Mexico you are referring to. Mexico is a large country. We went to Mexico during winter break and had zero problems with safety.

Because we are thinking of Mexico for summer vacation: What part of Mexico were you in and did you find any anti-American hostility? I would assume the touristy areas are OK but I am doing my research.

This is a stupid post and I don't know why I bother replying but.... Mexico City is beautiful, cosmopolitan, and safe. Quintana Roo/the Yucatan have well-developed tourist infrastructures and love Americans and their $. Oaxaca -- als beautiful and safe.

Look at a map OP.

Just notice the size and distance. Are you also afraid of going to Orlando b/c the murder rate or opioid deaths in ______ (Detroit? Chicago? other?) are so high?

Orlando is not Chicago. Even within a single city -- downtown DC is not SE. ST. Michaels is not downtown Baltimore.

Open your mind a little... or start with a map. Cancun is not a Zeta hotbed.

+1 There's a travel advisory against the US due to all the violence we have here. Yet somehow we choose to live here.

The United Arab Emirates, Bahamas, France, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Germany are among those urging caution to U.S.-bound travelers. The concerns include mass shootings, police violence, anti-Muslim and anti-LGBT attitudes and the Zika virus.

+1. Was just in Mexico over winter break with my family (including 2 young children). No problems whatsoever.

We just went to Puerto Vallarta. Lovely weather and lovely people. My daughter took taxis alone early in the morning to go to scuba. No problem. Wonderful. Maybe you should learn English first OP before stepping on someone else's culture.

We went to Puerto Vallarta a couple of months ago. Have several friends who have been over the last year. No one had any complaints about feeling unsafe.

Can I please completely hijack/divert from the OP?

We are considering going to Mexico over spring break with our 2 kids, both elementary age. A friend suggested Playa del Carmen rather than Cancun. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Also while I think we would definitely just sit on the beach I am sure we'd also want to visit Tulum at least. Would we need a car or could this be arranged through a hotel/resort?

TIA from a NP who is not scared to visit Mexico

Cancun proper has a lot of high rise, big name resort hotels on the oceanfront. It is 15-20 minutes from the airport. Playa del Carmen is more relaxed and a smaller town with more boutique hotels. It's pretty walkable to a strip of restaurants. It is about 1 hr from the airport. I've been to both places with my kids. My husband likes Cancun because it's closer to the airport and he thinks the city outside of the hotel zone (which most tourists don't visit) feels more like Mexico rather than a big tourist resort. I like Playa del Carmen, because I like peace and quiet. Both are nice. When we visited Tulum we had a rental car, but I'm sure if you google around, you can find some package that would pick you up in a bus and take you on a day trip to the ruins. For kids you may also want to look at Xcaret (big waterpark).

we are doing Playa del Carmen for spring break. It'll be my kids' first international trip. We will spend a few days at our own beach (El Faro condos), as well as a day at Chichen Itza (either private transportation tour or group tour), a day at xcaret, and probably take the ferry over to Cozumel for a day either snorkeling or doing a Cozumel beach just for fun. I looked into rental cars as we typically would do that. But, ultimately, the cost of the car and the cost of parking and the risk of getting lost/pulled over/etc. led me to go with using transportation services.

For four people, it is about $95 for transport to and from the airport to Playa ($95 total for both directions). Xcaret and Chichen (or Tulum or Coba -- saving those for possible future trips) are easy to find via tour operators. There are a lot of options. There is a Walmart about 6 blocks from El Faro and lots of restaurants in walking distance. The big difference b/t Cancun and Playa (from what I could tell) is that Cancun is almost all All-inclusive hotels (almost impossible to find Queen size beds in the hotels which was a must for me, and of course, the hotels typically require all four of us to sleep in the same room). Playa has hotels/all inclusives and condos. Condos are key for us -- we get separate sleeping rooms for the kids and a kitchen where we can have our own food for breakfast/lunch/dinner -- or we can eat out or take out when we want. I have a very picky eater and it's just easier for me to get food from a market (or Walmart!!!!) and have those things on hand. Plus, we can eat breakfast in our pjs.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Jeff should delete the OP and keep the thread.
