Can I please completely hijack/divert from the OP? We are considering going to Mexico over spring break with our 2 kids, both elementary age. A friend suggested Playa del Carmen rather than Cancun. Thoughts? Suggestions? Also while I think we would definitely just sit on the beach I am sure we'd also want to visit Tulum at least. Would we need a car or could this be arranged through a hotel/resort? TIA from a NP who is not scared to visit Mexico
Cancun proper has a lot of high rise, big name resort hotels on the oceanfront. It is 15-20 minutes from the airport. Playa del Carmen is more relaxed and a smaller town with more boutique hotels. It's pretty walkable to a strip of restaurants. It is about 1 hr from the airport. I've been to both places with my kids. My husband likes Cancun because it's closer to the airport and he thinks the city outside of the hotel zone (which most tourists don't visit) feels more like Mexico rather than a big tourist resort. I like Playa del Carmen, because I like peace and quiet. Both are nice. When we visited Tulum we had a rental car, but I'm sure if you google around, you can find some package that would pick you up in a bus and take you on a day trip to the ruins. For kids you may also want to look at Xcaret (big waterpark).
