female, naturally slim, have always done some form of regular exercise which included lifting weights.
About 6 months ago I abandoned my regular gym routine, because I was bored out of my mind and frankly wasn't seeing any improvement, and started a new workout program centered around isometric, small movement exercise - specifically barre class. The class is a killer, and is a great workout. My whole body has become tighter/firmer, but along with this I've noticed my jeans are now tighter. Not so tight that I can't wear them but I can for sure notice it. I've also gained 2lbs over that same period of time. No changes with my health and my eating habits haven't changed. Has anyone else, specifically women, experienced this? and if so, is this temporary or is this my new normal? |
I have experienced that after 6 months of weightlifting ( still doing that along with cardio and yoga), but never with other exercise. Seems odd that barre would make you gain more muscle than weightlifting did...ditto for water weight. |

It seems strange your pants would be tighter after 6 months of lifting. Barre shouldn't cause muscle gain compared to lifting, you would more than likely lose muscle mass. |
OP here- actually my barre workout is far more intense than my weightlifting routine ever was, partly because the instructor pushes us super hard whereas when I was lifting I was solo....so honestly wasn't pushing myself to the point of muscle fatigue. All that said, I may try cutting back on simple carbs and be more aware of what I'm eating - i.e., eat more "clean" |
I bet because you feel like you are working harder in barre, you are eating more than you were before. You’re eating “cleaner”, but probably more.
Barre alone isn’t really enough exercise. |
Sounds like you gained muscle, which has mass, and that is not a bad thing. |
No, eating has not increased. |
I think you are kidding yourself with SOMEthing. You don’t work out as hard as you say you do and eat as clean as you say you do for the time period you’ve specified and gain weight that is not very obviously muscle. |
Here is the other thing, Barre classes may feel like a hard workout but they don’t target large muscles, the muscles and muscle groups that really become the fat burning machines, like compound exercises like squats and deadlifts, etc., do. So I doubt you’re getting much of a big fat burn if you aren’t targeting those larger muscles or doing much cardio exercise that gets your heart rate up. |
My clothes became tighter with Barre classes, too - specifically in my calf area. |
If you cut out cardio to add more barre, you’re probably eating too much. If you’re eating really stayed the same, weight gain means you are now burning less calories. |
It’s 2 pounds. Maybe you’re just getting old. |
I get bloated with water retention from hard exercise. I don't know why. I skip a day of working out and I am thinner all over. Work out again? Rings are tight, etc. Maybe something like that is going on?

I am naturally slim too, and generally speaking - I gain weight when I do any exercise. Which I think is a good thing. I gain muscle tone, and muscle is heavier than fat. Don't bother looking at the scale, it will just sidetrack you. If you feel better, stronger, more fit, keep doing what you are doing. You also probably gained thigh muscle - which is why your jeans feel tighter. |
