Grocery store birthday cake, help!

Anonymous
LO's 2nd birthday is on Saturday and we're having a party of about 20 people. I also need to get cupcakes on Thursday for daycare on Friday.

Where should I order? Giant, Whole Foods, Safeway, Walmart, or Costco?
Cupcakes or sheet cake? Do I even have time for a custom order at this point?
Can I pick up on Thursday for the Saturday afternoon party? Or will it be stale? (If so, Costco isn't an option.)

FTM here and not yet experienced with kid birthday parties. Any help is appreciated!

Costco does a good cake. If you refrigerate it and then take it out a couple hours before the party, it won't be stale. My grandparents have done this for years so I speak from experience.

If you can get to a Wegmans, their sheet cakes are the best.

Don't do Whole Foods. Their buttercream is really heavy and rich, their cakes dry. My kids won't eat any of their baked goods.

Thanks! Costco would actually have to be a Wednesday (tomorrow) pickup. Is Wednesday - Saturday too long to keep in the fridge?

I wish, but Wegman's is way too far, unfortunately.

Costco does a good one, and I think Safeway is second best. Harris Teeter cakes are like diabetes on a plate - way too sweet and gross.

I actually like giant. We like sweet cakes, but they have other options for icing. They have always done a good job of decorating and been on time. You can easily order online.

My personal view is that Cisco cakes are disgusting and everyone pretends to like them to save money. But maybe it is just me who does not like them.

If the twenty people are mainly kids, then do cupcakes. Kids get antsy waiting for thier piece. If it is mainly adults, I would do a quarter sheet cake with two layers.

For the day care cupcakes, pick up the mini ones fresh or frozen from Giant. Anything else is too big too expensive and too unnecessary.

This and I’d get all white cupcakes. (Everyone gets the same and less of a mess than chocolate).

for custom you just need 24 hours usually so not too late. Harris Teeters cakes are good too.

I've always liked Giant's cakes the best but I have a huge sweet tooth. The frosting is very sweet but they also have a lighter version (can't remember what they call it.)

For me, Walmart would be next in terms of taste.

I really disliked Harris Teeter and Safeway cupcakes so once again would probably just stick with Giant.

Happy early birthday to your LO OP, two is a very fun age.

Thanks all! I'm going to stop by Costco today and decide between there and Giant for the birthday party cake. Will do the mini cupcakes from Giant for daycare.

Appreciate the help!
