Buy Nothing January Support Thread

So if you feel like trying to join on the "Year of No Spending" for at least one month, or want to encourage those who do, post here for encouragement and feedback.

I'm going to try. I don't have a shopping habit, but I do overspend on groceries, convenience foods, and takeout instead of cooking. And I am a sucker for things I think will be convenience gadgets (or stuff my kids want).

So today I notice there are two things I want to buy:

1) a new non stick sautee pan (I have and old one where the lining is wearing off, and also it is too small, I need a slightly larger size)

2) My daughter wants me to buy her an SAT Prep book.

3) tray for an invalid to use for eating in bed or on the sofa

I am going to sit on these things for a while before buying them and see if I can make do or get them a different way (library, check my kitchen cabinets to see what I have that I'm not using, etc.)

Ask friends with hildren who are a year or so older if they have any slightly used ones. heck your DC’ school career center t see if they have any; I know at our school people bring in their old books for others to use.

2 and 3 are necessary; skip 1 until you can no longer use it

It's just that the non stick lining has started to flake and is getting into our eggs and such! It's a pan I've used heavily for over 5 years so it isn't unreasonable to replace it at some point, but I don't need to do it this month.

Throw that pan out, it is a health hazard once it starts to flake off into your food.

Get a stainless steel pan and the SAT prep book, then don't by anything else.

Agree, you really should not be using it. Also, unless you're broke, buy your poor kid the SAT prep book. It isn't like she is asking for a video game.

Yes, of course, I am no longer going to use the pan. But this is "Buy Nothing January" for me so the whole point is to not just go and buy a new whatzis if I don't have to. Instead, to strengthen my frugal muscles and learn (or re-learn) other ways to get things I need than just ordering them off of Amazon which is always my initial response and part of how I've run up this credit card debt that I don't pay off every month.

I have *other* pans I can use. I just *like* the non-stick pan for eggs (which my family eats a ton of).

I have three cast iron pans that would be great to use (if iron flakes off no problem, it's good for you right?) but it's such a pain cleaning when I fry scrambled eggs. Maybe if I learned to season them properly, they wouldn't stick as much when cooking eggs?

Or I could revist freecycle and see if anyone is giving one away....

The PSAT book I found I can get at the library so that's super easy.

The tray for the invalid would be a total impulse buy. I saw a cute one at Target today and wanted to get it for him, but didn't.

What part of "Buy Nothing January Support Thread" do you not understand?

(BTW I mistyped, it's the PSAT prep she wants, not the SAT. Stakes are lower, she has a year.... and I found the book she wants at our library.)

OMG people, why would you live like this? To squirrel money away? Disgusting.

My daughter also just asked me to order her a new water bottle that was bigger than the one she has. I showed her two I had but she didn't like the valves on them. So I told her to dig in our cupboards and storage area because we have a million water bottles and tops, just mismatched. It took her 5 minutes but she found a water bottle that will work fine, and found the top in the storage area. She was even excited to find it (it was from a fun field trip she took last year)! I would have ordered her the water bottle because, hey, kids need to stay hydrated, but I didn't, and it only took her 5 minutes to find something that works fine.
