Someone told me about problems related to bullying at Yu Ying and the lack of support from school administration. I am looking for information confirming or infirming this, Yu Ying is certainly a school I would consider for my son next year. Anybody have any insider info? |
Without wanting to further this unfounded rumor, just remember that there are two sides to any story, and there is a great diversity of perceptions, mental health status, etc. that make up school parent communities. |
not usually the grammar police, but "infirming"? what is that? |
I am not sure what you mean by unfunded rumor, do you mean to say that there is no bullying at Yu Ying or that the admin addressed the issue effectively? This is what I want to know. There are two sides to each story, can you clarify please : the bully and the bullied? or the bullied and the administration? I want to make sure that if my sensitive and quiet child is bullied at Yu Ying teachers, admin and community will be on hand to support him. That is what I want to confirm before I even apply there next year. |
I don't know anything about Yu Ying other than we are sort of neighbors now--it didn't exist when my DS was starting school. But, I imagine the only way you could get that information for any school would be to visit the school, meet the administration and teachers, ask some questions and get a sense of it for yourself. I know before I chose a school, I visited more than a dozen public, charter and private schools and found the experience very enlightening. Good Luck! |
Current Yu Ying parent.
There is one ex-parent who has posted to the public list serve that the reason she removed her child from the school one week into the school year was bullying from the prior year, and its continued occurrence this year. The message and several related messages have been redacted from the list serve by the administration. The alleged bullying all took place (or should I say allegedly took place) in the rising grade classroom - the current 2nd grade. FWIW, I have known other charter schools where the "rising grade" meaning the oldest kids in the school for multiple years have had a "rough" classroom. Also FWIW, all of the allegations have involved only that one class, and not the younger kids at the school. By definition of the charter, the last year that Yu Ying can accept new students is 2nd grade (due to the Chinese immersion component -- entering as a 3rd grader the students would presumably be too far behind to catch up with the Chinese fluency of classmates). So, if your child is not at the school already, there is no chance of entering the grade level where the alleged bullying has allegedly taken place. Finally, I have spoken with the ex-parent, and it does seem to me, hearing only her side of the story, that last year's adminstration was not as proactive as I would have liked. |
Thank you, that's what I wanted to know. |
FWIW you should always consider the source. Schools have to contend with all parents, regardless of their motives, agendas, or prejudices. Judge schools for yourself, not based on allegations or one person's perceptions. |
I do not know the parents whose child was bullied. But if the child was bullied (or allegedly bullied as pp carefully says), and the admin did not respond adequately, regardless of the parents' motives, agendas or prejudices etc... I think I would definitely put the burden of proof on the admin, and I would not doubt the bullied child and/or parents. Why doubt/blame the victim(s)? |
My point exactly--how do you know they were victims?? |

The administration can't fully say anything due to privacy. The action taken by the alleged victim's parent, removing a child from Yu Ying and enrolling at an alternate school, would be a pretty radical action to take if the child was having a positive experience. So, that action does add credence to the claim of victimization. |
Also current Yu Ying parent--haven't seen bullying at all in my child's class (also not one of the classes under discussion). The list serv discussion was very illuminating--other members of the current 2nd grade class (where bullying took place) chimed in with different persepcectives with a view that there wasn't bullying going on, but rather a big group of happy kids. Or that administration was pretty proactive when something occurred.
Regardless, I'm sad a child had to leave because they were bullied because that is a painful experience for a child and I look forward to how the school plans to handle these situations this year. I also think that its disturbing to label the oldest grade "rough" when the kids were 1st GRADERS at the time the behavior took place--so 6 and 7 year olds. I do think the school obviously will focus in like lasers on this issue given the way the issue was presented to the parent community and has caused a lot of discussion.etc. So for what its worth, I would apply to Yu Ying, and then make your mind up after you visit. Our experience hasn't been a school environment full of bullying at all. |
Mine either! My child is in that grade and we have been very satisfied with the teaching, the families, and the administration. There are always people unhappy with their school--could have just been a bad fit. |
First, bullying happens in every school, public, charter or private. It is a horrible situation for the child who is being bullied and shouldn't go unchecked. I also think it is very important to protect the rights of the victims as well as the children who are bullying, as these children are acting out on insecurities or other issues.
I have a child in the second grade class at Yu Ying where the bullying is said to have taken place. When I questioned my child, my child told me that the children who have caused the problems in the class have been punished and that the teachers are coming down very hard on all students this year (my child actually thinks it has been too hard). When I first read the post about bullying, I did have a moment of panic, as I am sure that all parents with children in that class likely did, but when I reflect on what I know of the teachers, adminstration and the children in the class, I realized that I do not have a problem with my child remaining in the second grade at Yu Ying. |
A bad fit when a child is bullied??? |
