Yu Ying bullying?

I thought it sounded like parents wanting their neighborhood school to be responsive to their children. I don't blame them for being disappointed at Ross. I don't want my child learning below grade level either! The full story is available here. Page down to the first entry, Monday, July 24, 2006.

Did you look at the test scores for Ross this year? Not far off of Hyde's.

When you consider the populations of the 2 schools (more than 1/2 of Ross's test takers are FARMS, where Hyde's test takers on FARM were under 20%) it makes Ross's success even more impressive.

Or is Hyde "below grade level" too?

Is this a joke??!!

Ross teaches to the test, those kids have had "drill and kill" to improve the scores - not inspire a love for learning. Hyde offers a lot of extras: science, computers, writing workshops, music... Anyone who set foot in DCPS knows these schools are not remotely comparable.

xxxxx, I really hope this works out for your little girl. If you can, do try to stop fighting with parents and especially administrators via email. You leave an electronic record that makes you look a bit addled.

Any bets that there will be a flurry of emails in say, a year from now, about how awful Hyde is? My money says your next stop is homeschooling. Any takers?

so why didn't the guy just take his "affluent" self to the rounds of open house around the city if he was unhappy with the public school. I mean if you have refer to yourself over and over as affluent on a listserv , maybe just maybe you aren't.

I wonder what poor school this guy is harrassing in MOCO now

Yeah, shame on him for wanting to improve Ross, his neighborhood school. Didn't he know that despite being long-term residents of the neighborhood that the concerns of locals were unimportant? How dare they want to see a challenging curriculum at grade level! DCPS isn't supposed to be accountable to tax-payers or parents, you know! It's been riddled with graft, corruption, and patronage jobs for decades and it is the height of unreasonable expectations for anyone to go into a lousy DCPS school demanding responsiveness. Good riddance taking himself off to crappy old Bethesda - they know exactly how to treat parents like him - with good schools! What a jerk, right?

I knew the guy who tried to "improve" Ross and witnessed his efforts. Unfortunately he was too much of a steam-roller who insulted too many people. It was obvious from the start that his way of doing things was not sustainable. But he did start some good reforms at Ross as well as get some additional funding, and all of that has been worked out well.

Exactly , Shame on him for labeling himself as better than the parents whose childrern were actually attending the school who were apparently poor and trashy according to him. This kind of person is not good for ANY school -affluent area or not.

I know the person about whom you are talking. Your description of him could not be more off base. He would never label himself as better than anyone. He attempted to improve his local school and grew frustrated by what he perceived as a preference for out of boundary students. Whether he was right or wrong about such a preference, people who attempt to improve their local schools should be encouraged rather than have their characters assassinated. Ironically, many of the improvements he sought were actually implemented after he gave up on Ross.

It is quite easy to disparage people while hiding behind anonymous posts. It's a cowardly act even when the anonymous posts are accurate. But, it is especially bad when what is written could not be further from the truth. If you have more to say about either of the two individuals who appear to have become the subject of this thread, I suggest you identify yourself in the process or risk having your posts deleted.

Anonymous wrote:I agree with this poster--and I am a parent at the school. The parent in question always seemed a bit, well, unstable at best and said things that led many to believe she had real issues with African-Americans. Sad, but just because someone says their child was bullied doesn't make it so, and all those who automatically believed that where there was smoke there was fire...shame on you.

As another Yu Ying parent, I need to respond to this. The notion that no one should have believed this parent is totally unreasonable. Many of us do not know her and her post was really chilling. In my view it would have been irresponsible to write the whole thing off without seeking more information, regardless of how things are going in our particular grades. We love Yu Ying but we're still going to be alert to potential problems just like we would at any other school.

NP here. I know this parent, figured it out from all the above description, and you are all way off base! While her online presence may come off as addled, she is fiercely devoted to her DC and if she says bullying occured, I believe her. She has not been in three schools in three years. She had the bad luck to select Coeus, and was there until it folded...nothing to do with her and she tried her hardest to help them figure out the finances to stay open. She is a great mom and a really interesting and diverse person, so stop maligning her because you can.
