Why don’t people in “flyover country” just move?

Sad to say, but it’s obviously never going to get better. Flyover America has been circling the drain since at least the 70s. Why don’t they have motivation to put their families in a better place to succeed; a place with a dynamic economy and competitive peers? Politicians are so obsessed with new immigrants because they see flyover people as hopeless.

I am from flyover country. Many do move. There is a huge issue with brain drain. The people who do not move have legitimate reasons. Jobs, families, money. It is not like you can snap your fingers and create a new life on the east coast when 4 generations have been coal miners in WV.

Me again. There are also really great places to live in flyover country. It isn't all Appalachia.

As you watch dead broke often illiterate people flee conflict in the Mid East, Central America, etc. how can you say this with a straight face? How did Americans populate the west? They got off their freakin’ asses and fearlessly moved to better their families.

They expect business to come to them. I moved away from my family to put food on the table for my kids. I don’t understand why people expect things to come to them. You must go where the jobs are if you want to survive and thrive in the US!

Not everyone is cut out for New Jersey, NYC or Chicago. City dwellers are different than those who prefer country life.

And even with the population shift to urban centers, our political map favors rural/"flyover" areas. So we still need to figure out how to make these areas economically viable, or change the Constitition (which I would be wholly against.)

Ok. Well, good luck with that. This is why DJT won. Please stop because you make things worse. We ended up with an idiot for President. You do not understand flyover country. Have you ever been there?

You can say the same thing about blacks who remain in the deep South, where engrained prejudice is more rampant. It's difficult, emotionally and financially, to uproot yourself from one's entire support system, and many simply don't have the wherewithal.

Oh I dunno. Parts of New England are pretty white. Go to Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine sometime.

Rhode Islanders are some of the biggest "rednecks" I've ever seen.

This is a good explanation as to why people do not move - it applies to Indiana but you could apply this to any state.... http://lithub.com/they-found-a-meth-lab-in-cole-porters-childhood-home/

It also has something to do with the economy and finances and maybe just not wanting to move or being able to move.

OP is emblematic of why HRC lost and DJT won. I hate DJT and think he is a liar, but he at least was able to connect with flyover country (even if it was all lies and deceit). I hope Dems can turn around this east coast elistist stuff so they can start winning, because I think they do have the better policies for flyover country. But they won't be able to do so if they show such disdain like OP.

I moved to flyover country from DC. I love my town. LCOL. Good schools
Robust local economy. DC is a hellhole in comparison. No, most parts of flyover country aren't like this but you are really overvaluing what cities have to offer.

Well you can live where you prefer but don’t bitch about not having a good paying job! Again DC isn’t my first choice for living but I have plenty of job opportunities that enable me to feed my kids. Everyone needs to choose what they will sacrifice.

Why don't more businesses move to flyover country? This area is full of people struggling with high COL unless they make high six-figure incomes. Many companies could relocate anywhere or offer remote options.
