my kids, age 16 and 14, good athletes, drink gatorade when they work out. My wife thinks that gatorade is no good because it contains table sugar and other stuffs in there that are just not good for children so recently she switches them over to coconut water, specifically harmless harvest brand. According to my wife, coconut water is the best hydration during the work out because it has natural sugar and more potassium than banana and best of all it is natural. It is very hard to argue with "tiger" mom. She goes by "you get what you pay for" because a 16 oz bottle of harmless harvest coconut water equals eight 20 oz bottle of gatorade.
Anyone here that have kids drink coconut water during the work out that you can share? TIA. |
What's wrong with water? Coconut water is healthier than Gatorade, but make sure they don't drink tons of it. To much potassium can be unhealthy. I just drank water and ate fruit when I did high school sports and had no issues staying hydrated. |
Odds are your kids don't need either of those things during their workouts. Unless they're practicing for hours at a time out in the sun during summer, water is sufficient and both Gatorade and coconut water are just empty calories (albeit trendy ones in the case of coconut water). |
I don’t think it matters much either way. More problematic is the way you talk about your wife. Why the pejorative tone with such a simple question? |
I think it is wonderful in moderation as a more natural substitute for Gatorade which is pretty nasty. I use it myself. BUT don’t overdo it:

Coconut water is the best hydration bar none. Like everything else, just do not over consume it. For a two hours work out, 16 oz of coconut water with 48oz of regular water (with a little of salt in it) is perfect. |
I’ve started drinking Nuun lately after long runs. I like it because it replenishes electrolytes without sugar. I only drink it after working out for ~2+ hours...otherwise it is totally unnecessary. |
Where's your sense of humor? I didn't think it was a pejorative tone. Maybe lighten up a tad? |
So long as she would find it funny too, it's all good. I just don't thinks she would. |
+1 When I am out at a summer tourney, hours in the sun, then lots of water and watered-down gatorade is reallllly good. Some sugar, some salts. Not the zero gatorade. The rest of the time, water is all that is necessary. |
Are you the poster whose kids are homeschooled and whose wife stays at home to cook every meal for them because they are "athletes?"
|
Seriously? You are a losers. |
Do you correct women when they talk in much worst terms about their husbands. No you do not because you are a sexist hypocrite. |
