The BIG ONE: 20 years of Trump taxes obtained by NYTs

Folks, the issue about Trump's effective non-payment of taxes going back 15-20 years is a side show.

The real news is that Trump is insolvent. He is broke, with much larger debts coming due soon. That is a major national security concern for the US. Someone who is personally in debt hundreds of million dollars to foreign creditors (read: Russian) cannot be President.

Not true. I agree with pp.
I couldn't give one hoot about a billionaire who became a politician - and LOST money as a result.
I do care about politicians who have become multi-millionaires while in public office. Those are the tax returns I would like to see.

If Trump really cared about the American people, his tax law would have been focused on closing loopholes and easing the burden on middle income Americans who are struggling to make ends meet, rather than further enriching himself at their expense.

Cheer for him all you want, but don’t fool yourself for a minute that he cares about you. He thinks of you all as useful idiots, nothing more.

The "accountants" on this thread are either too in the weeds to see the big picture, or are desperate Trump supporters.

Don't democrats value the opinion of experts? Imagine if someone said that climate scientists are too in the weeds to see the big picture, or are desperate Democratic supporters.

The right wing says that all the time. Also, we are anonymous here, so your credentials don't exist here.

No, you don't care because it's Trump. Full stop.

+1000. Anyone who has gone through a security clearance would know how much of a risk Trump is to our national security.

Sorry, are you saying Trump doesn't pay a tiny fraction in income taxes of what teachers, nurses and construction workers pay? Please give me your expert opinion. I'm just a lay person so I don't know if I can understand this fundamental point.

If you admit to being ignorant, then perhaps be a little more modest and less accusatory towards people who know more than you on the subject matter. No one is saying everything that Trump has done with regards to taxes is perfectly fine - just that we don't have enough information to conclude one way or another. It is common and normal for wealthy people, especially those in real estate investments, to use depreciation and other mechanisms to lower/manage their present tax payments. This does *NOT* absolve them from the need to pay taxes on gains, just delay them to future years. The mere fact that Trump paid little to no taxes in two years says *NOTHING* about how much taxes he will eventually have to pay on those gains. This is like a climate change denier pointing to two cold winters and saying "aha! see! there is no global warming!"

The tax will be due, sooner or later. Trump can only delay it. The only escape is death, but that's another topic.

You must lack emotional intelligence if you cannot see that the problem here isn't legal, it is moral. You keep focusing on what is legal, but that is not what is so upsetting about this.

Can you name one whose tax returns are not freely available? (and he lost all that money before he ran)

No. I don't care because there is nothing illegal here. Except the leaking of tax records - if they are authentic.
Wondering where all the "we need to see Trump's taxes to show his illegal payments from Russia" posters are.

Yup. You can’t get a security clearance most of the time because it makes you vulnerable to being bought. Case in point is our POTUS now. Regardless of who wins in November, I hope that Republicans find the ethics they checked at the door of Mar-a-Lago and require all future presidential candidates to release their taxes. It’s good governance

Was Rachel Maddow their source, lol! A lot of blather in the recent NYT story, but again no proof. Unless I missed the link to Trumps recent returns. He paid millions in 2005 much to Rachel's embarrassment..

Not Donald, apparently.

That's how a progressive income tax system works. It's also INCOME tax, not "of the taxes." Income taxes are but one portion of the taxes people pay.

How is any of this relevant to Donald Trump thought? Or, are you trying to throw out red herrings?

So he does pay taxes, sometimes? I wish I could say that to the IRS. "I paid last year". lol.
