I'm a rationale conservative - can you convince me voting rights legislation is needed?

Gerrymandering mean electeds choose their voters not the other way round

Louisiana needs to draw new state legislative maps, and voters are now suing to have elections with the new maps this year instead of 2027.

Honestly, I don't buy the voter suppression and "democracy at stake" hyperbole. Anyone that wants to vote can vote, right? Yes, it might be inconvenient for some based on their work schedule, but that's always been the case. And In most places you can already vote by mail.

When I hear that democracy is at stake, I tune out because it's a huge exaggeration in my mind.

I'm open to argument, though. Can you change my mind?

Why would anyone want to limit voters from suing the government for denying them rights?

Pure insanity........

NEW: San Francisco Appoints First Noncitizen to Serve on Elections Commission.

Kelly Wong who came to the U.S. in 2019 from China and isn’t legally allowed to vote will be overseeing and creating policy for the San Francisco Department of Elections.

Wong is immigrant rights advocate who wants to educate other immigrants who don’t speak English about voting process.

Imagine that people who don’t want to integrate by doing the least and learn the national language will be deciding on the future of an American city.

Insanity.

How is this not illegal?

Prohibitions on participation in decision-making

In addition, foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in decisions involving election-related activities. A foreign national may not direct, dictate, control or directly or indirectly participate in the decision-making process of any person (such as a corporation, labor organization, political committeeor political organization) with regard to the person's federal or nonfederal election-related activities. This includes decisions concerning the making of contributions, donations, expenditures or disbursements in connection with any federal state or local election or decisions concerning the administration of a political committee.

“Wong’s appointment is the result of a 2020 voter-approved measure that removed the citizenship requirement to serve on San Francisco boards, commissions and advisory bodies. Each of the commission’s seven members is appointed by a different city official, such as the mayor, city attorney or district attorney. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Wong.”

If people didn’t reflexively bow to whatever their idiot propaganda told them to believe, they wouldn’t spend their lives in such a huff.

And good thing she’s not “participating in decisions involving election-related activities” as the PP is screaming about. “One of Wong’s priorities is to ensure that voter materials are translated in a way that people can understand – she pointed out, for example, that there isn’t an equivalent term for the word “reparations” in Cantonese or Mandarin.” QUELLE HORREUR!! https://www.kqed.org/news/11976026/san-francisco-appoints-first-non-citizen-to-serve-on-elections-commission

In other words, right wingers are working themselves into a lather about this woman elected and working - UNPAID, as all the commissioners are - within the confines of the law to increase accessibility and understanding for a huge swathe of San Francisco voters. Maybe they could pay attention to the GOP not only cutting voting rights access but also their ability to address complaints. No? Of course not. They hate when Black people vote.

And this is how we know that Black people aren’t voting for Republicans in any great or growing numbers. The GOP is actively suppressing their ability to vote because they don’t want Democrats getting votes.
